This raises a fair point; I think the syllabus needs significant changing...it's repetitive and fast becoming irrelevant to higher education...at least the 2u is.

As a side note, how does the NSW syllabus compare and differ with the syllabus in other states and also the IB?

I've seen the maths exams in victoria and to be honest I much prefer the nsw one. Sure, nsw doesnt go as far as it could, but a lot of the maths in victoria is applied maths, as opposed to the 4 unit exam which is mainly pure maths. The vic one isnt as heavily calculus based either, which has its good and bad side, good being that you can expand to other topics like stats and vector algebra. In terms of difficulty, I find the nsw one to be harder. I've also been told that the south australian syllabus is heavily based on statistics and that after year 12 you pretty much know how to do the first year uni statistics that is taught in nsw unis. I don't know if thats a good thing or not though...i'm not too keen on stats.

i like real maths... i hate this statistic crap... just punch in 1000 numbers in your calculator so you're sure that u have made a mistake.

thats why theres computer programs..

I concur. Statistics is NOT mathematics.

Stats goes way beyond punching numbers in a calculator, finding mean, median etc. In fact we are allowed to use a statistical program to evaluate data at usyd, because thats not the important part of what you learn. There are three main topics in first year at usyd, data analysis (which is where most of the number crunching occurs), probability (binomial, geometric and poisson probabilities) and inference (testing a statistical hypothesis eg. is there a correlation between cancer and smoking)

I think you'll find that statistics is very much mathematics. At the higher levels it can be just as interesting as pure and applied... although I think there's more boring crap to drudge through to reach that level.

If you take a normal introduction stats course at uni, you'll see that it actually starts off with calculus type proofs of distributions.

I think the main reason people think stats is easy is because it's taught in high school in general math and year 10. And pretty much everything in general math is plug in numbers into formulas.
