Anyone heard they are bringing out a new "Windows" (OS), but its not going to be called "Windows"

It is called Windows Longhorn at this stage, but is liable to change from a development to release name in the future.

Basically its gota modified GUI, it will take advantage of 64bit processors, it will have security in mind (har har har again) lol, theres a process where data on your hard drive will be encrypted making it very hard for someone to gain access to it even after physically removing the drive. etc. Theres some big articles on it. It's going to be fairly / very resource intensive, such as needing 3ghz + and a gig of ram.

i read somewhere that the server edition will be out in 2006 - to allow system admins to upgrade, and the general user edition will be out later that year - I think we're looking late 06. I can't remember where I read it though, maybe a PC mag, maybe on the net.

Longhorn will be a rock solid OS compared to predecessors.
If you're so good, you go make an OS. Windows isn't buggy, Blue Screens? Blame Hardware Vendors for writing buggy drivers, Viruses? Blame Anti-MS people like you who do things in spite of making Windows users life hell. Just to make another point, nothing in this world is Bug-Free, believe me.


Back to the topic, Longhorn is the Codename Client release for the next generation Windows. Dubbed to be released in Q1 of 2006. It sports numerous enhancments including a new API for the OS itself, Win32 is not gone i hope you understand, the new API is called WinFX it essentially sits on top of Win32. We also have Avalon which is the new compositing and rendering engine which takes advantage of modern graphic card features. Avalon is going to be fairly interesting, as the demos that MS have made already provide a clear insight to the power it has. Furthermore it opens up a new language for developers dubbed as XAML, Extensible Application Markup Language.

Longhorn also has a new rich set of Web Service technologies dubbed as the Indigo pillar. And the much talked about WinFS the next generation file system, however this has been pulled out from the Longhorn RTM as MS decided to backport Avalon and WinFX to Windows XP, but WinFS will be released as an free update once Longhorn goes RTM.

Thirdly, stating that I would have any thing to do with "viruses" and "making windows users’ life hell" for your information you misinformed asshole, I’m on windows right now and use it on all my workstations in my home.

I think the point being made was that the security issues which tend to arise wouldn't happen without people being knobs and exploiting flaws in the code. Not that I entirely agree with this line of reasoning, as I'd much rather see the flaws discovered and fixed in a timely manner, but it's a valid enough point. There wouldn't be the massive issues that there are if people would stop being idiots, but that's not going to happen, ever.

I don't actually think Jonathan was attempting to imply that you were personally responsible for any of them (Which seems to be what you've taken exception to).

In response to the thread, yeah, Longhorn is looking good in my books, I'm yet to see MS release an OS that wasn't worth the upgrade (Mainly because I turn a blind eye on ME, but that's a different story).
