notebook for uni (1 Viewer)

waht is the best notebook/laptop for a uni student?

requirements: Good size of storage i.e. 30Gb+ HDD
a good amount of memory 256 RAM, tho sd or ddr i dont know which to pick
i would like a small sized notebook so a 15 ince screen should suffice
able to withstand usage: i use alot of IE windows, wmp, acrobat reader, norton system works, ms word etc. my current desktop lags too much
offer connection: couple of usb (1.1 or 2.0 is ok), parallel, modem, network card, etc.
OS: dont mind win 2k or xp
dont need software, but ms 2000 or 2003 is ok
and under the price of 1300.

and also a shop where i can get too, i live in nsw.

Some of the Dell Insprion(1150) at www.dell.com.au series will probably fit your budget. If the notebook is for bringing to uni you should look for something with at least 4 hours battery life and weighs no more than 2.5kg you won't get that new for $1300.

I just bought a notebook recently which is great for uni (Fujitsu P5020 with additional battery) weighs 1.6kg and lasts 10hours

Yeah, if your looking that cheap you may aswell look at second hand laptops. Or go to david jones and ask to buy the shelf model cause they'll discount 5-10% of it , the dude also told us they would discount another 5% if they spot any dead pixels.

The only times that I ever move my notebook is when I take off to participate in a LAN... Once every 6 months, basically. The university labs tend to suffice, or there is always pen and paper (what a thought!).

i am not a serious gamer or anything so, just that i use alot of programs when i am using a comp.
plus i am limited financially, tho memo could you tell me where you bought and how much?
ill be working in the summer holidays so hopefully afford a better one.
but a simple comp is sufficient.
ill be using it more coz the desktop is old and slow. plus i like doing work in front of the tv and i cant do that when my desktop is in my bedroom.

Cannot beat thedesign of the apples , ibook, g4 etc
- but i find if ur not use to the O.S and different software aps, its gonna be a lil while to adjust to it...

also, macs arent really shown anywhere in the shops.
i dont mind the os and stuff, its the software. like if i buy a ibook, what software comes with it?
also, i have an older printer using parallel, dunno if it is compatible.

aren't iBooks terribly expensive even with student discount? not to mention a mac..

try looking on ebay or auction sites if you don't mind the trawl (it takes some time to find a good one + at the price you want). graysonline.com.au has online auctions for demo/returned hardware. i saw my laptop there for $1500 ish (retail $3750 or something).

you don't mention if you want a cd rom drive, floppy drive etc? I think most of the new laptops don't come with floppy drive default but you can buy that as a usb peripheral.

For uni the priority is light and functional - the way you posted makes it sound as though it's a desktop replacement in which case you might want something a bit heavier with more features but you have to carry it around ... which might stop you from bringing it to uni..

also if it's a desktop replacement you probably want a bigger HD so you can store more - 30gigs runs out pretty quick on a home PC, imagine what it would be like when you have all your home stuff (music, pics, pr0n) on your laptop.

anyway... toshiba is heavy (if you get something light like the R100 you're not gonna have features like a cdrom), dells are heavy and big but affordable, ibms are ugly, vaios are expensive and tiny, macs are .. well, macs are good, but expensive, plus it involves learning a new OS if you haven't got one at home.

it sorta is like a desktop replacement, but im burning wateva i can onto cd so i have more space.

yeah i forgot abt the floppy cdrom, id want a dvd rom with it. or ill get a usb key.

but i am a simple user without the need for alot of functions, so i just wnat better performance and the neccesitites.

Virtual PC... friend of both Win and Mac

I bought a laptop from Dell. It was through my work, so I got company discount.

Reasons why I bought it:
- Needed a new computer fast, didn't have time to shop around
- I go to friend's houses often and help fix their computers, and when you're doing a bit of networking, it's nice to have more computers to test with.
- At uni, some programs you NEED to have with you all the time to do ur work
- It's good to use whenever BOS has a stall and needs a computer
- claim off tax

1. How long does it take to recharge the battery and does it actually last for 6 hrs?

2. how easy is it to install/uninstall programs? similar to win?

3. With connecting to the internet, does it have like a wizard to get you through it ? and the info required is just the number to dial, passwrod and username.

4. would it wokr with old printers, specifically hp deskjet 610c?

I have a Dell laptop and it's very good. I've had it for almost a year now with zero problems. It is my desktop computer (because I moved to go to uni so it is more practical to have a laptop than a desktop so I can take it home when I go home and stuff). If you don't need portability, just buy a desktop because they are heaps cheaper. I barely use mine as a laptop, i've taken it to the library a couple of times but that is about it really. So unless you are going to use it portably, then just buy a desktop. And Dells are really good value for money in my opinion.

In response to 4, often it is just easier to buy a new printer IMHO. Companies make most of their profits off their ink cartidges and you buy a rather good (and macOS compatible) printer for around 100 bucks.

Then again, I wouldn't suggest an ibook. You can get a good deal on a second hand lappy on ebay if you look around. A friend of mine bought a 6 month old HP P4 2.4ghz laptop with 512 ram, 80gig HDD and ATi video card for less than 1 500; and this was around 6 months ago too. Though, he did also order 3 lappy's before hand that never arrived; but ebay refunded him the money each time.

I'd rather OSX (mmm BSD) than use windows.... unless it were for games I have no choice. In comparison of an iBook/ Powerbook to the Intel/Windows based notebooks if you look on eBay, iBooks/ Powerbooks have a greater resale value, in contrast to the Windows/Intel based laptops. But then again if you wish to use Windows, just use Virtual PC
