what are some of the factors that actually vary the brightness in periodic and non-periodic stars?? for extrinsic it is the eclipsing or hot/cold spots but every text book i look in only tells me examples of intrinsic stars, not why the brightness varies.

any help appreciated

intrinsic = helium ions forming in lower atmosphere -> star expands -> helium less opage -> light escapes(most luminous) -> star collapses, temp incrases and helium ioneses and cycle restarts.

extrinsic = another close star, most likely a degeneration, which draws hydrogen out from the less dense star

Don't forget Eclipsing Binaries.
