The language departments make students to do a test before the commencement of any language course to sort out the capability of students. If you have done languages in High school, then you are most probably required to take the advanced or intermediate level if there are any. The test is bascially to identify what level you are in, and often used to sort of tut classes as well for varying abilities of students even though they may all take the same level.
