i know that the exam marks we get given as part of our hsc results are not what we actually got in the exam, but are moderated and fiddled with. i just want to know why, and what they actually do to your mark...and how close your reported exam mark is likely to be to what you actually got before they messed with it? does rank have anything to do with it?

The raw marks that you obtained from the HSC Examination (i.e. the actual marks that you get) will never be reported to you. The raw marks will undergo a process called "Aligning". This will result in the "Exam Marks" that will be reported to you.

The reason they do this is to account for the difficulty of the exam compared to previous years, as judged by the examiners who actually have to sit the exam him/herself. The "cut offs" for each band is then determined. For example, in course X, the raw mark required to get a band 6 is a raw mark of 100 - 80 inclusive.

So if a student were to score 80 (raw mark) in the exam, his/her score would be aligned to 90, just enough for the Band 6 cut off.

Each year, the "cut offs" for each subject are different and there is no way of telling how close your raw marks were to the actual reported exam marks. However, the administrators of this site was able to obtain information for the cut offs for 2001, 2003, 2004, so you can have a look at that.

Edit: Your rank has got nothing to do with the aligning process.
