I'm thinking of going into UNSW next year and doing an arts degree, specialising in political science.

Anyone doing this who is able to tell me if its a good idea? Or how the subject is in generaL>?

UNSW Art in general is suffering from funding shortages. UNSW in general is one of the best Universities in Australia, bar the inclusion of General Education subjects.
So overall its good? Thus far?

usyd is shite for undergrad. if you want a good undergrad program just for political science then go to ANU. but if you want a good range of related subjects like international security, development, political economy, come to UNSW. There are some great lecturers, heaps of intelligent students, really good library, fantastic exchange opportunities for politics as well as internships.

Are you a fuckign idiot?

You are

political economy is its own discipline at usyd, with the greatest professor of the subject in Australia (Frank Stilwell).

International Security + Development politics are topics with lots of options at usyd. International relations IS political science you dick.

UNSW is nowhere in the international stage, and everyone recognises UNSW social sciences undergrad is worthless.

You are trolling and not doing it well.

Compare the reputations of usyd academics and unsw academics and tell me how it is possible that unsw is anywhere near usyd?
Lol a troll talking about reputations of undegrad courses.

UNSW social science in 2004 was ranked 19th in the world and USYDs 24th, just because the UAI is lower........

I enjoyed my three years if arts at unsw (pol sci major). ANU probably beats them all for pol sci, especially in the area of international relations.

Yeah political economy is the one thing Usyd can genuinly claim over UNSW, however political economy is in itself fairly worthless, reguardless of which uni you are at.

International Security + Development politics are topics with lots of options at usyd. International relations IS political science you dick.
Not quite professor, if they were, ANU would not offer seperate degrees for each.

UNSW is nowhere in the international stage, and everyone recognises UNSW social sciences undergrad is worthless.
Actually the average UAI of somebody doing arts/social sciences at UNSW is slightly higher than USyd, due to the combined people.

And as was said before, UNSW arts outranks Usyd arts overall. Unless you really love political economy ...

I cant speak for political economy or most of the other arts subjects that much since I dont do them, but in terms of reputation UNSW politics and int. rel. is highly reguarded.

Compare the reputations of usyd academics and unsw academics and tell me how it is possible that unsw is anywhere near usyd?
Good question, Usyd IS lower overall, and outside you political economy guy Usyd cant claim anything, everybody does their arts PHD's at ANU anyway.

Hi,

I went to usyd for a year, and studied political economy, political science and then transferred to unsw and also studied political economy and political science there.

The BA is better at UNSW. However political science and political economy are much better and better established at usyd. UNSW is the better uni with a much more welcoming environment and more rigorous teaching.

First of all, the foremost question is whether the threadstarter can even get into either uni. If s/he can, and they think they may have a chance, what about the scholarships on offer? If you're good enough for both and don't rate your chances of a scholarship well, then consider the environments of both unis--social, academic, etc. Ask around and see if any friends or older siblings' friends etc may know something. My personal opinion, though by no means based on anything other than impressions and my view of 'prestige' by both unis, would rank USYD as better in terms of Arts. As to the particular area of political science, I wouldn't have a clue.

that comment was completely worthless and overly general. i'm an 06er and i learnt jack all from that waste of writing

anyway from the research i've gathered into uni courses and degrees i would say usyd arts outrates unsw by far. a PhD is no measure of how decent a uni's undergrad course is like.

barring the uai cut-offs (usyd is 82, unsw is 78 in 06) usyd is still more established in its art degrees because it hasmore alumni and prides itself on its political economy (which is very popular in the international business course).

P.S. if you do commerce or some other random degree trying to come here to argue that your uni is better, than it only serves to highlight your ignorance and insecurity as to whether or not you're at TEH BEST UNI IN AUSTRALIA!!1!ELEVEN. the thread starter was after arts and political science not after the entire social science department. mere mortals

What do you actually do in political science? I'm thinking of doing it at ADFA. I just wanna know what type of things you do in political science or politics, or whatever.

The bit in the ADFA booklet had something about learning to make impartial decisions or whatnot. Sounded ok.

USYD > UNSW.

The student quality at unsw is much worse than Sydney - no one enjoys themselves nor engages in passionate debate!
depends on your class
