Perhaps, but I don't think it should count towards the ATAR.
Just because I don't achieve highly in english doesn't make me unable to do a maths/science/finance course.

I say that it should be compulsory, even though I hate English to the core, it allows you to learn how to structure/write a formal piece of writing even thought it may just be memorising you tutors essay on crap you'll never use in your life.

I improved so much from year 10 onwards with my writing, so yes It should be compulsory, BUT the choice of whether you want it to count or not should be up to you. Now someone may argue why do it then? because it will teach you things which may come in handy at some point in life, even if that's 20 years down the track, you're setting the foundations now.

that said, I hate English.

English should be compulsory, it is used as a "cohort benchmark."

Compulsory - yes
Forced in the calculation of the ATAR - I'm leaning towards no

I hate the subject with a passion and as much as I wish it wasn't compulsory nearly all the time, I do believe it should be.

Language skills are key to life. So many things rely on being able to be coherent in how you write and speak, and English teaches you how to do this (of course).

Yes. I think it needs a huge restructuring though, and better fundementals taught in lower years.

No, how will poetry and Shakespeare help me when I want to pursue science.
It will only lower my ATAR =[
I hate it!

I did, but that didn't change my view. I was just stating my opinion.

nope, should only act as a prerequisite for courses at uni such as arts, law, commerce etc. Should not be compulsory if you want to do maths/science related courses.

I know how you feel, I'm assuming about 90% of the people dislike/hate English but the skills you develop are obviously important in life. I also hate but, hated every minute of it, still, the skills I learnt are good, in general.
