So I've fallen in love with the cover girl of the Good Universities Guide 2011... (2 Viewers)

...and have resisted the urge to stare into those friendly-looking, clear, attractive, dark eyes enough to look through the book.

And apparently Sydney is... bad, or at least worse than I thought. Looking at some of these rankings:

  • Access by Equity Groups (whatever those are): 2 stars
  • Entry Flexibility: 1 star (obvious, I thought)
  • Staff Qualifications: 3 stars (really?)
  • Teaching Quality: 1 star (oh my...)
  • Educational Experience - Generic Skills: 3 stars
  • Overall satisfaction: 1 star (disconcerting, to say the least)
  • Getting a full-time job after graduation: 2 stars
  • Positive graduate outcomes: 3 stars

I thought Sydney was better than that... considering 1 star means bottom 20% of universities. Even the dreaded UWS got higher on overall satisfaction (three stars)!

Interestingly, U Never See Whites outranks Sydney on most of this. So much so, that it's tipped the scales for me to go to UNSW.

Point of the thread anyway is:

1. Is Sydney... that bad?
2. Can this Good Universities Guide be trusted?

I made a thread like this before but... yeah.

Link me to where you're reading this... the University of Sydney is genuinely a very good university; old and has some of the greatest and brightest academic staff there.

But yes, link.

This is what counts in the end:

Success in getting a job - 4/5
Graduate starting salary - 5/5
Positive graduate outcomes - 5/5

And then you hear the opposite from Sydney students as well - so... it gets confusing.

Though Aqua, according to the same website. For UNSW...

Success in getting a job - 5/5 (4/5 in the 2011 guide for UNSW, 2/5 in the 2011 guide for Sydney, believe it or not)
Graduate starting salary - 5/5 (no change)
Positive graduate outcomes - 5/5 (3/5 in the 2011 guide for Sydney)

Then go to UNSW :)

The guide isn't exactly accurate because I'd have to say that USyd is the most reputable university in Australia (and the most well known), regardless of anything else - it has rep with employers too.

I don't know Aqua... too many opinions. I agree with you with it being the most prestigious and well known and all that stuff - but apparently the people who've gone there don't think so. I suppose it's to UNSW for me then...

And ohexploitable, I shall not stand for your blasphemy! How dare you call her 'she'... you shall address her by her future title: "Mrs. Shadowdude" =P

More seriously, she looks better in print - methinks. Something about dark brown eyes and hair to match with a skin tone that juxtaposes well, will always catch my attention...

And she's not hot. I'd place her on the beautiful end of the spectrum. That is, defining 'beautiful' as physically pristine - and 'hot' as one that arouses sexual thoughts.

I involunarily perpetuate the stereotype though! I adhere to the stereotype... I can't help that =P

So am I. But I make an effort to socalise sometimes.

If you're becoming obsessed with some girl's face printed on a magazine then there is something wrong with you and thus should take action...

All interesting points but the truth of the matter is you go to the university with the degree that most fits what you want. Apart from the obvious preferences like Arts at USyd and Commerce/Engineering at UNSW, you'd have to sift through what the degree you want at each university entails and then decide accordingly I would think.

I think you underestimate the amount of socialising I do.

And I won't even talk about the second thing because you hath blasphemed the name of my future wife =P

Infatuation not love my friend. You have no idea what love is.
I was adhering profusely to the silly teenage girl fanaticism where any and all attraction to anything is automatically labelled 'love', thus allowing us to point the finger at ourselves - and observe our own definition and use of words to show how misuse can turn words of great value to meaningless cliches. =P

Also mitchy, your use of the word 'cute' has got me thinking - along with SuperDumbo's comment as well.

I normally use the dichotomy beautiful/hot - though I realised that 'cute' is more an adjective to describe physical attractiveness while 'beauty' is more suited as an 'overall score', if you will. But then 'cute' has its own cannotations, and I would suggest perhaps the dichotomy of pulchritudinous/hot, or maybe photogenic/hot.

I think 'hot' has gotten itself into modern slang and is perhaps the best word to use...

/me is thinking too much
