Ahura Mazda: The main god of the Persian kings. In royal inscriptions it is sad that he created man and earth and that he bestowed kingship onto the Achaemenid kings. His image is similar to that of the Assyrian god Ashur.
Apadanna: Audience hall of a Persian royal palace often featuring rows of tall columns.
Arstibara: A high position at court held by a noble, meaning spear bearer
Avesta: The sacred book of the Zoroastian cult
Bandaka: bondsman. Describing the relationship of subjects to the king
Banuka: mistress. Atossa was referred to as a 'banuka'.
Daevas: evil spirits or deomns. Xerxes forbade their worship
Darics: Persian gold coins from the time of Darius with the Persian king on one side.
Dat/Datu: Persian word previously thought to mean 'law' but now believed to mean 'decree' or 'royal command'.
Dathaba: army units of 10 men
Ganzabara: treasurer
Hazarapatis: A high position at court held by a noble, meaning 'commander of the 1000'.
Karsha:a new weight in the shape of a pyramidion introduced by Darius
Kurtash: Workers on royal or noble households
