what kind of adds are you talking about? be more specific

if it is an add, i will assume a newspaper add. usually the graphics is used to portray what they are trying to promote, superimposing the brand name on a graphic to compare resembelance. the use of lettering to make the brand stand out.

the use of a slogan to have jingle which either annoys the responder or atttracts the responder to stare at it longer.

use of colour if the add has colour, adds to effect.

however, i think what you are asking is adds in relation to journeys. yes that j word again. in the first section of the paper you dont really need to find that many techniques.
they mainly only ask for a maximum of 2 techniques that reflect journeys. make sure they are obvious or make sure you have two distinct techniques to make sure you get all hte marks allocated for that question.
when you search in this text, make sure you link it back to journeys or else you're screwed. well thats only if the question requires you to link it to journeys. warning: do not blab on in this last part of section 1. you will be doomed if you do so.

if ur talking about TV ads, consider:

camera angles: high, low, medium, close-up, long range, etc...
music: happy, sad, melancholy, joyful, etc...adds to the atmosphere
costuming: also adds to atmosphere to promote a product.
setting and lighting: atmosphere again.
dramaticising: think of the recent PS2 ad with the family (tell us the price dad!(repeat...)...TWO TWO TWO CONTROLLERS!)--> sensationalising
caricature: to make it funny, entertaining, therefore more persuasive.
and, as wrong_turn has correctly said, also consider slogans, jingles, and colour.
