Hey all,
I was wondering if the bonus points for a bachelor of economics at unsw and usyd stack up? The reason why I am asking is because I am an applicant of EAS (5 bonus marks) as well as being eligible for bonus points (another 4) for doing well in EX1/Eng Adv/2U maths.

Another semi-related question, does it matter the order I put my preferences in as long as they aren't my first? For example, am I less likely to get into economics than my friend even if we got the same atar if its my 4th preference and its his 2nd?

For the second half of your question you should read the FAQs on the UAC website. All preferences will be considered equally in main round from 1st down to the 9th. Say you placed Course A as your fourth preference and others who have a lower ATAR than you placed it first; you will get the offer ahead of the others as you have the required marks.

Good Luck and All the Best.

My take on the first part of your question is, they can possibly stack but there will be a capping point at a certain number, and it also depends on how the uni's use the EAS. DO NOT, i repeat DO NOT assume that you will automatically get 5 bonus points, because some faculties will say give a certain amount of places to people on EAS to enter under a 5 UAC point buffer

EAS is not guaranteed 5 bonus points. EAS allows you to be considered for a course if you are within 5 ATAR.

Please elaborate? Cos what I have been hearing is that, for example, if I got an ATAR of 68 (which I did NOT) but the course I want to get into had a cut-off mark of 75 last year then the uni ranking system will still consider me to have 73? In other words, if the cut-off dropped by 2 marks or there are still a few spots left, then I could get in?

For e.g. the Cut off for a course is 78. If you have EAS and received an ATAR of 73, you will be considered for that course. It will be up to the uni whether to offer you a spot or not. In your case yes it is possible to get an offer in such a situation. Some courses will give you the full 5 marks. However, some courses do not. A great example is Law. Since the course is so competitive, USYD for example considered everyone with 94.70 + (cut off this year as 99.70), however, only those with an ATAR of like 97.85+ were offered spots for law.

The bonus points allows you to be considered by a uni to offer you a course if you are just short of the cut off by say 5 ATAR. It does not mean you are guaranteed to get into the course because you are short of 5 ATAR and have EAS.
