I started year 12 this term and my prescribed text for the common module is "The Crucible". I understand that we need a related text for the first assessment and won't be needing it for the actual HSC, but I am a little lost on how I should structure my essay when writing with both the prescribed and related text. Would it be similar to a regular comparative essay? If so, would integrated or text-by-text be a better structure? Also, should I allocate equal focus to both texts?

Sorry for so many questions and thank you so much in advance!

not very advice but i too hope for someone certified to respond but i do think its somewhat like a comparative essay and i dont necessarily think theres a right structure unless your teacher has indicated a preference as long as its coherent and ordered logically you could try browsing the resources section for samples that could help

i think most teachers would recommend you spend more time on the prescribed text e.g crucible since youll be referring to it again when theres trials/hsc dont know the specifics but since its the first module people tend to forget about it faster than the other two which is why it might be worth capitalising off/investing research into the text now (aside from it being an assignment) so choosing a shorter/easily consumable related text is better than choosing something else thats more longform (+ takes more time) if youre talking about the content (it sounds like ur doing a multimodal??) i think 50/50 split is about standard since it is a comparative or at least what i would do but yeah...just take this as some offhand reassurance from a student since im bad with structure too but a response is better than no response maybe?

also you would think there would be fewer people online on a education forum at this time now but how are there already two guests viewing this

Thanks so much for the quick response! I'm surprised someone's awake ahahaha

I'm actually doing a timed exam for this term's assessment T^T I think 50/50 split also makes more sense but I've seen a few where they have the first two body paragraphs allocated to the prescribed and the third talk about the related? I'm guessing it depends on coherency like you said.

And yes, I decided to do a film for my related text since it's less time consuming :)

i think you should check the structure with your teacher since 2/1 split sounds pretty valid as well, just depends on how even itll be for comprehension but sounds like the better split tbh especially since the outcome is to know about the prescribed text
good on u for choosing a film haha im planning to do some poem for mine (1984 multi)
