There are two forms of dialysis - haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. During haemodialysis, your blood is cleaned using an artificial kidney.

Haemodialysis cleans the blood. To do this, access needs to be made to your blood stream so that blood can flow to the artificial kidney (dialyser). A ‘vascular access’ is made during surgery to allow this. ‘Vascular’ refers to your blood vessels, e.g. arteries and veins. There are three types of vascular access. These are a fistula, graft or a catheter. Fistulas and grafts are permanent types of access and a catheter is usually temporary until a fistula or graft is ready for use.

You should learn this info along with the process of a healthily functioning kidney, as the question is highly likely to be a comparative one.
