NEW YORK - Screen idol Tom Cruise clashed with a US television host Friday when their interview degenerated into a heated exchange over the benefits of psychiatry and mood-altering drugs.
After touching on all the normal Cruise bases -- his upcoming film "War of the Worlds," his recent engagement to actress Katie Holmes, Scientology -- NBC "Today" presenter Matt Lauer hit a sore spot by bringing the conversation around to actress Brooke Shields.
Cruise created some controversy recently when he criticised Shields for revealing that she went into therapy and took anti-depressants to deal with postpartum depression.
Defending his remarks, Cruise took exception to Laeur's assertion that some people could benefit from anti-depresants like Ritalin.
"Matt. Matt. Matt, you don't even -- you're glib. You don't even know what Ritalin is," Cruise said.
"If you start talking about chemical imbalance, you have to evaluate and read the research papers on how they came up with these theories, Matt, okay?
"That's what I've done," Cruise said, before launching into an attack on the whole field of psychiatric medicine, which Scientologists spurn.
"Psychiatry is a pseudo science," Cruise said. "She (Shields) doesn't understand the history of psychiatry. She doesn't understand in the same way that you don't understand it, Matt.
"You don't know the history of psychiatry. I do," he added.
When Lauer repeated that he had known people who had been helped by anti-depressants, Cruise accused him of irresponsibly advocating drugs he knew little about on national television.
"Just knowing people who are on Ritalin isn't enough. You should be a little more responsible," the actor fumed.
