just wondering first of all.. how many hsc candidates are there this yr?
second uai goes up in 0.05 increments right..so this in mind..it means that 0.05% of coherts are present on each uai increment with 30% being 30 or less
anyways
for examples sake.. we'll assume that there are 60000 kids in this years hsc
if uai is designated in 0.05 increments.. does that mean that there will be 3000 kids on each 0.05
100 uai 3000 kids max
99.95 uai 3000 kids max
(60000/0.05)
basically is the 3000 kids thingy essentially right and does anyone hav any idea how many kids are sitting the hsc this year and if so..where would u find out?

maybe theres something wrong with your calculations
its probably closer to 3000 per 5 uai
or 30 kids per 0.05

In the board of studies pdf, its in the post of the top of this page, it says the calculation includes the yr10 cohort, so its more like 100,000 people i guess, but UAI isn't given linearly, check the pdf.

I read in the SMH recently that there were 65000 peeps doing the HSC this year...I assume that doesn't include those yr10 peeps tho.

I reckon that it would be 32.5 peeps per 0.05 based on 65 000. So using that there would be like 6500 people get above 90....I think

But then with those yr10 peeps included it would be heaps more...I wonder how many actually left then or in yr11?

As has been said, you need to include the Yr 10 cohort in your calculations.

The UAI is a ranking of applicants, and is thus a rectangular distribution with roughly the same number of people on each point. UAIs are reported to two decimal places, with the second decimal being either zero or five, producing two thousand and one ranks. Therefore, the number of people on each UAI point in any given year is roughly n/2000, where n is the size of the HSC age-cohort for that year. The age-cohort consists of all those students who sat the SC exams two years earlier.

In 2001, there were 82 350 students sitting the SC exams, which includes 100 students who sat the tests overseas. This means that there should be approximately 41.18 students on each UAI ranking in 2003, and 20.76 students on the top ranking of 100 (top 0.025%). Obviously, minor variations do occur, but that's largely consistent with figures from previous years.
