Show that y= 1/x-2 has no stationary points.

y = 1/x-2

= (x-2)^-1

dy/dx = -(x-2)^-2

= -1/(x-2)^2

stat pts where -1/(x-2)^2 = 0

since the numerator is not zero dy/dx cannot equal zero...so there is no soln for x, ie no stat points.

I thought you could find a stationary point by subbing in 2 into (x-2)² it would make it undefined, then I read your writing then I realise either way there is no stationary points.

I get questions like these, but I prefer interpreting questions from and on paper instead of a computer screen.

It's a hyperbola, so there are no turning points.
