i have heard a lot about both universities. i like the fact that uts is in the city and provides a broad understanding of business. The practical nautre of the course is also very attractive which i heard is what employers look for in graduates. However, unsw has great prestige and reputation especially in the fields that i am looking in (ie accounting and finance). It also has a very nice campus which promotes socialising. But my time in a selective school has made me dislike international students (dont take it personally, its just that we have cultural incompatibilities). i wont be doing a cadetship next year either. wat r ur thoughts?

consider EVERY commerce/business degree in sydney. consider where your friends are going. consider your daily transport arrangements to uni. anything commerce/business related has good job prospects unless you take some whacked-out majors.

UNSW!!! I can understand where you're coming from with the international students thing, but there are still plenty of people who are sociable and easy to get along with.

I'd say USYD has everything i've bolded. Have you considered it at all? If you aren't interested in cadetships than USYD's fine for you. UNSW and UTS allow you to study and do a cadetship concurrently.

accounting and finance are the FCE @ UNSW great strength so id go there.

USYD is also good for finance but not as good for accounting and UTS is vice versa

By international students, do you mean asians?

UNSW is the strong in all areas (eg. actuarial/finance/accounting majors), so it would be your best bet. You can easily move between majors within 1st year to try everything out before you commit to anything. You can't get that kind of flexibility at other unis, eg mac is good for actuarial but crap for everything else.

I suggest doing a combined degree to give you more choices, and to take advantage of the strengths across faculties. (I mean a combined degree from 2 different faculties, not a bogus one like BCommerce/BEconomics)

what do you mean when you say BCom/BEc combined is bogus?
The BCom/BEc seems like a fairly redundant concept to me. It seems the only real reason to want to do it is if you want to get 3 majors out of the Faculty of Commerce and Economics.

what if you want to do economics just to learn how to think, but not really to open up career opportunities, is it still redundant?

then do an economics major in a straight commerce degree and save yourself a year of studying extra crap. at least in com lib you can take subjects from other faculties.

the combined com/ec is really stupid unless you're an actuary student who doesnt want to do a science degree in order to stay at uni that extra year for part 2 exemptions.

If you seriously hate international student with a passion, then I'd advice not to think about either of the courses that you memtioned, esp in UNSW.USYD and UTS.Good luck dude

i dont see anything wrong with a B Com/B Ec degree, thats why i transfered to it

im doing accounting, economics and international business

obviously this wasnt the best way to use my degree, but there are a lot of ways that it would be a useful degree, depending on what u want to do

i dont see what is wrong with broadening, ur horizons/views in business...

but okay if ur interested in economics, it would be a top degree
u could do a economic history or if u dont like that u can just do economics major in ur economics degree
and in commerce another 2 economics majors, one in business statistics (which is really econometrics so u could do that in economics as well) and 2nd major of b usiness strategy and economic management...

i think thats a super combination personally

anyways check out the new degrees at unsw next year

Com/Eco is alright if you really really want to do 3 majors (as in, for fun or whatever), but I'd much rather finish in 3 years and get a job rather than hang around for another year, purely to get one extra major that I probably won't end up using.

this was what a usyd careers advisor told me last year: 'broadening horizons' = 'spent an extra year at uni wasting my time doing subjects i dont need to do'.

Hmmm..thats true. Didn't think of that.

I reckon an Economics-related major doesn't really add anything to an actuarial degree. (The Actuarial Studies Unit/Department of Actuarial Studies is actually part of the School of Economics). Better off doing law, comp sci/seng or maths.

IBUS is a bogus major, like INFS.

Combined degrees should aim to add complementary skills, not just knowledge. For example, Econometrics in Finance or Economics is equally light on the theory, but combining with a Stats major would be ideal in lifting your understanding.

The new degrees are crap. They should stop trying to square off with USyd with their bullshit Liberal Studies degrees.

look i dont think u can comment on a subject u havent studied, international business has its uses somewhere...(and i kinda admitted it was a bad choice, actually after that post i finally changed my mind on it, but not for the reasons u said) ---> infs is not a bogus major

as for doing finance a finance major by itself, that is probably the most limited degree u could ever do at university and the only thing that is saving u is your mathematics

any degree is good, if u choose the right options, and u gain skills that do complement what ur learning if u choose the right options

just because a degree doesnt fit what u like, doesnt mean its not relevent, not everyone wants to do finance and maths at uni...plenty of people think that what u study is pretty useless

i agree IBUS is bs, did it last year.
I quite like the Bcom Liberal and BCom International, gives more choice and are shorter than BCOM/BA
