Read Scullard's From Gracchi To Nero for a contemporary perspective on the events which occured, or Plutarch's Lives for an ancient source.

Basically the important thing is the isuing of the SCU or the Senatus Consultum Ultimum, which basically empowered the mob or a person to 'save the state from immediate danger by any means possible'. One of these was the killing of certain people and more importantly Roman citizens without any trial or normal procedure. This is important due to the strict nature of Roman's to their 'customs' and 'practice' ie, mos maiorum.
