So you will get ranks for each assessment, and an overall or cumulative rank. So say in your first assessment you come 3/10 in that particular task, then 4/10 in the second, and 1/10 in the third, your overall rank based on all three's results might be say 3/10. The final rank made up of all your assessments throughout the year is what the board of studies gets

- Say you have 10 people in your class
- After each assessment you will get a rank from 1-10
- Each assessment is worth a certain percentage
- After all your assessments are complete (after your trials most likely), you will get an overall rank based on your ranks and marks throughout the year (so first, second, third, fourth, etc...)

After you complete your HSC exams, and after some moderation, your rank and marks throughout the year will help determine your internal mark which accounts for 50% of a mark for your subject.
- This is the board of studies way to 'fairly' calculate your mark for your subjects

It's kinda confusing, but all you need to know is that you want the best rank that you can get :)

Your rank is your position in your class for each subject.

This rank is used to determine your Assessment Mark in the HSC (worth 50%).

Basically it's a system used to make sure students who work consistently throughout the year are recognised.
At the same time, it kind of acts as a fail-safe device, so if you did well throughout the year (i.e. had good ranks) but screw up your HSC exam, it doesn't totally destroy your marks.
