i heard that standard limits you to only achieve in bands 1-4,would you be better off choosing advanced?

Not true.
A band 5 is very achievable, but you need to work hard to get it. the reason why this is so is so students who do Advanced English are not disadvantaged [as both advanced and standard scale exactly the same]
