No doubt Sydney, UNSW would be one of them... would Maquarie be following after them or even in the same league?

What about UTS?

I know that UWS is seen as one of the worst uni's ... i don't see whats so wrong with it though... just that their administration part kinda sucks but other than that ... i rekon it's pretty kewlz

Thats right, absoloutley nothing wrong with UWS.

UTS and Macquarie don't exactly have snob value, compared to UNSW and Sydney, but they are both great in their own rights. But elite, I wouldn't say so.. (I'd prefer to be at UTS or Mac over Syd or UNSW thou..)

elite, i would think refers to perhaps international recognition. usyd and unsw would definately be the top 2.
mq would be more elite for something like acturials.

It's not that UTS is shit, but like Huy and Rahul say, it isn't as recognised.. which is how I took elite to mean..

USYD and UNSW are definately considered the most elite.
I would say UTS after that, then Macquarie.

yeah international recognition it is, i asked a few people i talk to who live in america, and all of them have heard of USYD, but UTS nope.. or any other Unis i think USYD is well known because of how long it's been around.

UTS is equally one of the best. In any case, it is only comparable on a faculty by faculty basis. In this case, I have heard that UTS has one of the best law faculty's compared to other Uni's and also the best Arts and Communications faculties due to its international connections.

uws is bad as it didn't begin as a uni, it is a series of colleges put together and never picked up its reputation

UWS has done very well for a university that was only established in the late 80s. I think that everyone should remember that UTS emerged in a similar fashion (a number of institutions forming a university), too.

because the number of different careers you can get from UTS is very narrow compared to say UNSW or USYD. Therefore they can specialise and become very good at what they concentrate on :)

But since they don't have the range of subjects etc that the others do (eg no med, no psych in science department, their law isn't considered that great compared to UNSW/USYD etc), they can't really be part of the 'elite' unis..

UTS has much stronger, closer ties between faculty and industry than the other universities. This applies to Business, Law, Accounting and Technology. USyd and UNSW have their schtick in slightly different spheres, focusing more on research rather than industry (hence the difference in employment rates etc).

To be honest, all 5 iniversities in Sydney are of a very high standard. EVEN UWS.

UTS was a college before a uni in the late 80's - and now is a great uni. I would assume some of the other unis weren't unis earlier too. The thing is with UWS which is why it hasn't attracted a good reputation is because of the fact that it concentrates on providing education to a population base that isn't that elite in terms of income, say compared to USyd.

No offence but this post is pointless.. if elite is taken to mean prestigous looking buildings then yes Usyd is elite and the fact that it was the first uni in sydney and built over 100 years ago would probably have something to do with the fact that its so beautifully designed.. but in the end, a building doesnt mean anything... As for colleges forming unis, CSU was also a part of that trend.. the architecture of Bathurst itself is absolutely gorgeous yet the uni buildings are hideous.. a reflection of the architecture of the 70's and 80's- when it was built..

Whilst sydney can offer a good law degree, It cant offer a com what csu can, nor can it offer the extensive IT facilities that UTS is able to. When i told my mum i wanted to go to csu she freaked out cause she had never heard of it. she rang every newspaper and radio HR department tht she could and they all gave her the same answer- CSU is definately one of if not the best producer of communications graduates in australia.

In my opinion, the "elite" exists only to the superficial because all unis in australia have their strong points and their weak points and just because a place is built of sandstone as opposed to cement is no reflection of the calibre of education that a person will recieve.

this is how popularity rates the SIX unis in Sydney.

1. Uni of NSW
2. Uni of Sydney
3. Uni of Technology Sydney
4. Uni of Western Sydney
5. Macquarie Uni
6. Australian Catholic Uni

PS: dont anybody DARE contradict me, as these are raw statistics from UAC showing the popularity of unis, based on course preferences submitted to UAC by students across all of new south wales.

peace^^
