In terms of whackyness it's definitely Keynes. He was a womaniser, a bohemian and part of the Bloomsbury group (which advocated much sexual freedom, something uncanny in the 50's-60's).
Though generally, Adam Smith made the whole bloody science. Many others just stood on the 'shoulder of giants'.
And props to Malthus for predicting the world would end (the Industrial revolution really bitched him).
