Medicine (MB BS) - Prerequisite Subjects (1 Viewer)

For the MB BS (Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery), what are the prerequisite subjects? Is Mathematics Advanced or even Mathematics Extension 1 required or would Mathematics General 2 suffice? (There is a focus study included as part of this subject called "Mathematics and Health" in which you learn how to calculate doses of medication required, make body measurements and make caluculations related to human blood.) Mathematics General 2 is an updated version of the current General Mathematics course, while Mathematics General 1 is a new, more practical and basic course - the majority of Year 12 class time is spent on focus studies (80 h/120 h). Each course requires students to study the SAME common Preliminary Mathematics General course.

Also, would any two units of science suffice or is Chemistry required? I would like to do Biology as it interests me more and I have other interests I wish to pursue, so I probably couldn't study BOTH subjects in Year 12.

Hey,

Maths and chem are not prerequisities of any medical universities in NSW.

If you have not done chem for UNSW, etc you will be able to do a bridging course.

Maths 2U is only a prereq at JCU and Bond (both are Qld undergrad med schools). Chemistry is also a prequisite for JCU, Bond, UTAS and Monash in Victoria.

For example, if two students had the exact same UAI, say 99.25, and got similar results in the UMAT, and both had a good interview, would UNSW or USYD favour the student that did Mathematics Advanced over the one that did Mathematics General 2?

I looked at the course outline for UNSW MB BS and, really there doesn't seem to be much math involved. Does anyone doing the course, or anyone with knowledge of what the course involves, know the standard of math required for Medicine???

they don't look at the subjects you studied- only your uai, umat score and interview (afaik). i think the only problem with doing general maths (in terms of affecting your chances of getting into med) is that it doesn't scale that well, making it harder to score in the high 99s, which is where you kinda need to be for med.

edit: i just realised they're making the new general 1 and 2 thing... so noone really knows how it'll scale. disregard i guess

no, not really

possibly, but if you are willing enough to do med, then you should be capable of doing adv maths anyway, its seriously not that hard and i would expect that most med students have good threshold to handling difficult subjects like maths extension.

I'm not sure about the mathematics subjects ..but
for sciences i think any two (chemistry) will suffice according to the Job guide???

lol you dont need any of that... there isnt any maths till like 2nd/3rd yr (very remedial)

and bio or pdhpe might be useful but lots of ppl didnt do it

nothing can really prep you for it.. just study once ur in

phys or chem/bio or Pdhpe/maths seem lik decent courses for a start... not really that important

The only place that requires high 99's is Usyd's provisonal MBBS and UQ's provisional MBBS (provisional = so you have to do another degree before you start Postgrad medicine but you don't need to do the gamsat or interview).

If you do well in the UMAT and have a good interview, you can get into med with a UAI in the 98-99 range which isn't as hard as getting "high 99's".

Likewise, if you do get a uai in the high 99's, you may still not get into Med.
