scaled mean, hsc 09:

standard: 17.9
advanced: 31.3
ESL: 21.8

so it's pretty hard to beat standard/ESL in terms of crap scaling

Scaled mean doesn't mean anything actually. Because it doesn't show scaling at all. Look at the aligned-scaled mark relationship. THAT'S what scaling is (essentially)

It's hard to explain how Enlish Standard has the same scaling as English (Advanced) but they do. You can check that out from various UAC scaling reports and other documents.

yeah i know what you mean, i wasn't disagreeing with you :)

the standard/adv. scaling is a little complicated and i don't really get it fully. what i have heard tho is that it's very hard to get a high (scaled mark >90) in standard

Yeah, with a normal brain like mine, I cannot understand either. :(

But I don't think it is necessarily harder. It's prob because the people doing standard are just bed at engrish.

english advanced = english standard scaling
It's true. I think all englishes (exc. EE1 and 2) scale the same but the people in Advanced coincidentally do better in English than the people in Standard.

No, that's not true. English (Advanced) generally has the higher scaled mean than ESL.

People will need to try to differentiate between SCALED MEAN and SCALING. Even though they are somewhat related but there is some significant difference.

At the top ends, ESL seems to have higher scaling in general but I think English (Advanced) and English (Standard) both have higher scaling in general.

I was Dux of my school for 2008 and I did 4 units of English. I've never heard of a person who did ESL in my school achieving Dux. However, it's not impossible because Dux is awarded to the student who achieves first place in the most subjects.

I equalled first place with another student (5 first places) and just beat her for Dux with less than a 1% difference! The principal averaged our positions I think so it was extremely competitive!

i don't get why not all schools get their dux as the student with the highest UAI, cause UAI is a rank, so it's graded everyone for you...

That's not true?
Ext. 1 English scales best out of all the Englishes, and Ext. 2 comes in second.

um what?

i know this isn't the best method of scaling estimation, but when you look at the % difference between aligned -> scaled, i think extension 2 comes in worse than advanced (quite a bit) and extension 1 slightly below advanced as well

The scaling of English Extension 1 and English Extension 2 are roughly similar. Both scale better than Advanced/Standard.
