General Questions Regarding "Units" - Please Help (1 Viewer)

I was strongly reccomended against it though.....

I did my Language starting @ 200 level as I'd already done HSC Extension but yea....

I think that you *should* do 100 level units in your first year because
a) easy credits
but more importantly
b) gets you more settled into Uni way of learning and Uni way of writing

But i was never told that under no circumstances except for the prior knowledge (like language) could i do a 200 level subject in my 2nd year....

I.e. in languages etc... and that a 200 level subject, being 200 level in itself excludes all first years... was this wrong? Just out of curiosity... reading this thread quite a few people seemed to disagree with that...

Yeah, they strongly suggest against it, but there's nothing in the rules or regulations saying you can't.

To be fair, I find the difference between 200 and 300 level to be more intense than 100-200 in the subjects I've done (particularly Ancient History where a unit is offered at both 200 and 300 level, and the difference in assignments goes from 1500 word essays to 2500-3000 words).

I think it depends on what 200-level units you're trying to get into. Not all units are 'streamed' with an obvious link between 100 and 200 levels, and may be more indicative of "intensity" as AsyLum has mentioned above. I definitely have friends that were approved for ARTS200 in second semester of their first year, and I am under the understanding that a number of Actuarial Studies studies do ACST211 in first year as well.

start in the 100 level class and if you then are finding it 2 easy talk to the teacher and they move you up - there were people in my first year that started down in the 100 level class but then were allowed to move to the 200

There are no 100 level language units, they only start at 200 (in my degree), the only prerequisites for the one i want to do are entrance to the b/Ancient Hist(hons) and it says its for those with no prior knowledge... but i dunno, most people start their languages in 2nd year...

4 years, its compulsory do two languages. Im 100% sure you can start some 200 level language units in your first year without any prerequisites, i was just wondering how difficult it would be... but i figured if i cut down on other units it would help make it easier?

1) I've kinda sorted out what units I want to take in the first year:

3 units (9 credit points) for 1st sem
3 units (11 credit points) for 2nd sem

This gives me a total of 20 credit points. From the amount of units and credit points I have for each sem aswell as my total credit points, am I seen as a "full time student" now? If it still doesn't make me a "full time student", will doing one more unit in the 2nd Sem make me a full time student?

2) I would just like to clarify something. If in the handbook (units section) it says that a particular unit is only offered during the "second half year", does that mean I won't be able to do that particular unit in the first semester?

"X2 - External study; Offered in the first half-year"
"X2 - External study; Offered in the second half-year"

4) What does "NCCWs" mean?

5) In the 2nd sem, one of my units is a 200 level unit (I can do this because I will be doing its Prerequisite units in the 1st sem). My question is, will I be able to cope with a 200 level unit in my first year? How hard is the work load?

that means exactly what it says - (it would probably be X1 - External study; offered in the first half-year"?)

Means that its done externally and offered in 1st and 2nd semester....

Hi again...

I just have 2 really quick questions:

1) What exactly does "externally" mean? Where will I study the unit if it is offered "externally"?

2) Ok the 'one' 200 level unit I will be doing requires a prerequisite unit. However I will be studying the 'prerequisite unit' and the 200 level unit both in the 2nd semester (since the prerequisite unit and the 200 level unit is only offered in the 2nd sem).

Am I still eligble to do the 200 level unit even though I'am doing its 'prerequisite unit' in the same semester?

external - means you do it at home, with many subjects having at least one "on campus" session where you go in for all day of a saturday (sometimes the whole weekend) and do some face to face stuff - especially in languages anyway

its a PRE-requesite, not a CO-Requesite so i dont think you'll be able to but im not 100% sure on that one....

I just want to ask a quick question. I'll be doing a double degree this year, so at academic advising, will they expect me to know what my core units are? Or will they outline my core units to me, on the day, and then help me figure which ones to pick?
