anyway expressions of intrests closed on January 14. and from then the gov has to decide who they will get to produce them, and then the company can actually start production....

I go to a Catholic High School and we get apple laptops in a few weeks as a part of a Wollongong Diocese program. Apparently our principal got a letter from Julia Gillard providing us with additional funds to do so aswell!

Oh man you are sooo lucky. Getting either the Macbook or the Pro would be awesome. Do you get to keep it though?

As for the government laptops. Public schools in NSW will be getting them around May-June from last report.. they won't be very good though. They are only netbooks and locked down like a nuns cunt. All they'll be able to cope with is simple school work and internet use.

And people at private schools get fuck all.. good on ya kruddy.

Yeah I heard something about middle of the year too..

But..we won't get ours till end of this year or early next year because you have to remember the laptops go to the schools who need it most; rural..

We'll be getting it for two years, then I think we can either pay more money and keep it or we can give it back to the school. I think it's the Macbook becuase that's what the year 7s got. But the downside = SUPER HEAVY BAG

I don't think my school will get them for a very long time. And really, why are some of you hyped up about a laptop? I have had one since year 9; they're nothing new, it's a computer you can take with you. Sure it came in handy when I had some extra curricular things for multimedia and german and other random things, but are you going to use them for taking notes in class?

I'm not for the writing notes on the computer idea. I wouldn't keep in my head. I can type faster on the computer and might be able to get a lot more down faster, but what I type now... I probably won't remember it, even if I try a lot.

You see, this is where tax payers money goes. Laptops for non-government school system pupils... It's crazy, that any government, state or federal, is content to fund schools which already charge exobranent rates for a place.
So instead of the government saving and spending the money they promised as part of one of their suposed 'mandates,' but instead waste it 'aiding' a private, discriminatory and wealthy private system.

Do year 12 students get them or do we dip out cause we've almost finished school?

Also, each laptop is allocated $2500. $500 is for the laptop and the rest is for networking and maintenance, etc. Not a single laptop will last six hours as after 50 charges, their crappy batteries will probably only manage 2 if ur lucky.

The government's locking thing is stupid anyway. If we get to keep them when we leave, how are we supposed to use them? If we take them home, how are we supposed to use them away from our school's network?

When you get it, wipe the harddrive clean and stick Ubuntu on it. It'll run twice as fast and u won't get viruses from it...

u guys will get it in june/july, or August if you are unlucky. Note that this special kind of 'laptop' is specially manufactured for high school students, so it's small, light and crappy. So dun get ur hopes up, but i guess its betta den nothin.
