In simple terms, the University policy allows only 42% of students enrolled in CHEM1611 (maybe its like this for other subjects too, I'm not too sure) to receive a final grade of Credit or above. The rest must get Pass or Fail.

so some students can be disadvantaged?

thats what sets uni apart from the hsc, and is why so many people find the first year incredibly difficult, because they need to learn to kick their own asses or suffer the consequences.

why would you want to pay a tutor to teach you something when you could go to your lectures/tutes and teach yourself effectively from your notes

you also realise you go to uni to get the degree right as well as learn... i could just teach myself the entire course and print myself out a cool cert but it would be worthless
