CNN.com - Philippines debate government promotion of contraception

Some highlights:

"The bill is not about religion. It is not about morality," said Edcel Lagman, a congressman. "It's about rights, health and sustainable human development."
Some one-third of the country's 90 million people live in poverty. The Asian Development Bank said that problem will persist until the country curbs its birth rate -- one of the highest in the world.
"Why should we use contraceptives, teaching our children the use of contraceptives," said Ed Sorreta of Pro-Life Philippines. "It's totally against the teaching of the Catholic Church. The poverty is really caused by other issues, moral values."
"When you talk about natural family planning, it needs discipline, that's where many couples fail. They lack the discipline."
Abortion is illegal in the Philippines, except in cases to save a mother's life. But the United Nations estimates that half a million illegal abortions are performed in the country every year.
Despicable.

Hah. Yeah. Descpicable, but certainly not unsurprising.

Sorry mate, religion is a personal choice and is thus a fair target for criticism.

And in this case it's entirely justified.

The nationwide Pulse Asia Poll found nearly two-thirds of people support the bill.
Honestly, the catholic church should not have a say at all. I mean what would they know about poverty? They've got money pouring out of their ears.

More religious bashing...
I'm just spreading the good word. It just so happens that this good word is that the former good word was wrong.

I especially like the bit where they practically state that poverty is caused by a lack of discipline. Then why the fuck isn't Australia reeking of destitution?

Sorry, but the Catholic Church constantly meddles in the politics of countries like the Philippines. In this case, it is clearly wrong to protect its own illogical dogma, even from a Christian perspective.

But I suppose when you're a law upon yourself... :(

"The poverty is really caused by other issues, moral values."

Essentially:

HEY HOMELESS PEOPLE. YOU'RE HOMELESS BECAUSE YOU WEREN'T MORAL ENOUGH. IT'S ALL YOUR FAULT. SCREW YOU.

it's not religion bashing, it's just stating the facts.

you have to admit, these quotes are massively closed-minded and don't take into consideration the natural evolvement of society whatsoever.

accidents happen. people should be aware of how to ensure they don't.

I'm sorry I just think the title of this thread is a bit sensationalist. Sounds like something out of The Daily Telegraphy or similarly crappy tabloid news press.

It's stringent doctrine that has kept the faith alive.
we're talking about politics not faith.

religion can have it's place, just not in the laws of society, affecting those who don't want to be affected.

Yeah, I kinda did that on purpose. Figured more people would come and discuss. And I enjoy starting popular threads. Gives me a thrill between the knees.
