This is a far more interesting discussion.

Prostitution is completely legal in all states and territories of Australia.

Prostitutes generally report a substantial number of their clients are married men. Some prostitutes will report that the majority of their clients are married men.

Looking at it from the perspective of what it does to families/relationships, there is an argument to be made that it helps sexless marriages, where there is still love, but the wife has lost interest in sex, often due to medical, or biological issues. Is it fair for the wife to expect her husband to remain faithfull when she will never have sex with him again? The husband is able to fulfill his needs in a mutually agreeable fashion, and maintain the relationship with the women he loves. Otherwise the relationship would certainly break down.

This is not an uncommon example. Women refuse sex to partners, in otherwise loving marriages, particulary after menopause or childbirth. Prostitution is the saviour of the traditional marriage.

Regardless of the effect upon relationships, I believe it should be legal for reasons of indivdual liberty.

It is not legal enough.

There are still stupid laws making brothels difficult to open, and easy to be closed down if nearby residents don't like them, even if they are causing no measurable disruption to the neighborhood.

It is also still illegal to solicit on the street.

It is legal to solicit on some streets. For example in Newcastle, Maitland road, near islington, is notorious as a legal red light strip. There are archaic laws on the books that make it so. There are girls standing along that street soliciting every night of the week.

But yes, the laws should be loosened.

If prostitution becomes illegal I think it will be much harder to regulate the industry to certain standards (like I think prostitues need STD checks periodically?) as it will still exist even if it is made illegal.

Should stay legal.

+1 for individual liberty.
I think its in the best interests of the women involved for it to remain legal and to keep the industry well regulated/monitored.

This is interesting. If true, it means that ppl raep because they're horny, and not because they're on some power trip (in some instances anyway).

is that block just before kings cross (on the road coming from hyde park), (i think the block has a ferrari saler and a convenience store, and a lot of tranny/normal hoes) legal?

they generally ask me if i want coke whenever i've walked past, but surely they're prostitutes aswell.

My great fear is that treating sex as currency in this way forms a real thin end of the wedge problem. Whilst I can't ever believe it will be officially sanctioned I fear it will lead to instances where people are owed money believing they are entitled to make up the money through forced sex.

Should be not only decriminalised but become its own legalised market. The government could tax it earning millions, shutting down pimps and therefore street violence, in the process.

That's the situation pretty much exactly as it stands today.

Australia doesn't have widespread illegal/street prostituion, due to the number of legal brothels.
