In years 7-10, at the school I was at at that time, all cars parked in the adjacent street which had Ps on them (i.e. clearly student cars) got egged/scratched up, while other cars were left alone.
The school ended up having to instruct students to remove P plates.
Were the students so dumb they couldn't figure it out themselves?

Iv had my car parked in the main st across from a pub for like 5 months now and its never been touched or had magnetic p plates stolen and its like the nicest car ever in the world ever. So yes, remove p plates.

Honestly when I was on my reds I used to drive my parents BMW X5 (Yes, I had an exemption, no I will not tell you how to get one) all the time with P-plates on and it never got touched once. The thread is a waste of time, regardless if you have P-plates on or off it dosn't change the odds that your car will get vandalised/stolen.

where the fuck does the op live. bankstown?

I drive an illegal/ car.
The car got dented within a week of ownership, no p plates.

The person who did it was a construction worker, probably from merrylands or some shit.

It all depends where you are though.
I mean, here in South-Western Sydney, lots of things get stolen and whatnot.

One time my friend took my magnetic P-plate when I was in a car park queue, then stuck it on the car in front. LOL.
She grabbed it back when the car in front started driving off. >_>

Ooh, I know someone who has an expensive Merc convertible, on P's, and the brake light got knocked out of place, after parking it somewhere.

Considering I share my car, I get into the habit of taking the plates of since I heard if a non P plater (i.e dad) gets caught with P plates on, he gets fined and loses like 4 demerit points = dead me.

Wow. That's arseholish.

HOW TO GET AN EXEMPTION: apply at the RTA. Most European cars are on an exemption list, and applications for exemptions are usually approved automatically. Which is why I will be able to drive my parent's Golf with a turbocharger AND a supercharger when it's delivered.

Wait huh?
Did you have to tell them that it was the only car in the household or something?

As if you can go to the RTA and say "I have a European car, and if you don't let me drive it that's racist and I'll tell the current affairs programs!"

The only reason for this because I was looking for a late 1990's/early 2000's Saab or Volvo, which both happen to utilise low pressure turbochargers. No hoon here.

Lol no, most of the European cars I'm talking about are exempted for several reasons:
- they're built like brick shithouses, and are thus very safe
- they're WELL built brick shithouses
- hoons don't buy them
- VW, Volvo, Saab, Merc, BMW etc all complained.

I'm a green P-plater and I have been driving a 1998 Saab 93-S (manual). No problems here.

EDIT: This only applies to certain models of said makes, obviously. A Mercedes McLaren SLR is not going to be on the exemption list.

Haha soz, misread.
Dilated pupils from these stupid eyedrops.

If these cars are on the prohibited vehicles list, then what's the chance they're on that exemption list? I mean, they wouldn't be prohibited in the first place right?

Aaahh, too confusing.
But realistically, I don't think I can get one. :(

The maintenance and the insurance is enough to scare me off, despite the attractively low prices from massive depreciation.

It's not so much a 'prohibited vehicles list' as a 'all vehicles with a turbocharger/supercharger are not to be driven by p-platers unless they're exempted'.

Need exemptions/documentations for them.
There is no automatic exemption.

If a Merc SLR was the only car in your family. Chances are, RTA would exempt that too. Face it, they're happy to take the $25 off you either way.

My thoughts on subject:

1. Removing P plates is less likely to incite potential keying... maybe if you had a really nice Benz or BMW on your red P's, leaving your P's might spark jealousy and a keying? Heck someone keyed my Civic when I first bought it and it wasn't even sporty/modified/etc... >__>

2. Furthermore, people used to nick my magnetic P plates so I got used to taking them off and putting them inside my car. The other solution is to get one of those P plate holders which you screw into your number plate and hold the plastic P quite tightly and make it difficult to steal/remove easily.
FUCK my 323Ci
