Hi,

I am looking at doing Medicine at UNSW and I was wondering what sorts of scholarships are available to me: a local entry, high school leaver who wants a scholarship with no strings attached .g. must spend 6 years practising in a high priority area (unless they're academic like only need to get 99.90+)?

I heard that the UNSW Scientia scholarship is for anyone who gets over UAI 99.90 except for Med students (because quite alot of UNSW med students get 99.90+) where only like 2 are awarded. In this case I was wondering how they would go about selecting the two (or however many there are) out of all the candidates?

Is there anyone here who knows anything about scholarships available to med students? Or is there a med student on a scholarship who could give me some advice on the selection process?

I've gone on the UNSW scholarship site but its doesn't give enough details.

I think the only one that you'd get (aside from perhaps the equity scholarships or whatever) are either the Scientia or 'that scholarship you get when you're nominated by your principal (4k one-off payment, name escapes me.'
And yes, I can confirm that only two people are awarded the scientia scholarships each year - based on their combined total score (ie uai, interview and umat all together). IIRC Scientia is only 5 years out of the 6 but I'm not sure. As apparent, with all the high uai/umat/interview people you'd need to be achieving very well throughout all three sections I expect.

Regarding the Scientia Scholarship, there are only two available for students enrolling in the MBBS program. Once places have been offered in the MBBS program and accepted the Dean of the Faculty knows who he can choose from to award the scholarship. The Dean uses a combination of UMAT, UAI and Interview scores to determine to whom the two scholarships should be awarded. ...This will not be determined for some time ie. At least until after first round offers have been made and accepted.
Oh, and scientia has strings attached. You need to maintain 80 WAM which is a pretty sizable grade - very few people maintain that

How about those random-named-in-honour-of-someone type scholarships? BTW DP are you on a scholarship?

I don't know about the random-named-in-honour-of-someone - but there's very few of those out there, as well as being pretty specialised selection criteria and whatnot.
