In the play there is the theme of Power-

The Presence of Rick in the ‘Shoe-Horn Sonata’
Overview-
This plays most obvious power play on stage occurs between the interviewer and the women that he is interviewing. Rick is the main off-stage character. We hear his voice as he questions the women in the interview scenes. He only asks questions and the nature of these questions changes as the play proceeds. Rick's presence in the play highlights the notion of the manipulation of these women by unseen men. His position of power as he asks questions reflects the positions of power of the unseen men at whose hands these women have suffered in the past.
Analysis/ Examples-
Rick is the sole reason for the women's eventual reunion. He provides them with the opportunity of telling all.
He is not, however, simply seeking to draw out the information of their experiences for the benefit of the women. They are sensitive to the fact that in telling their stories they are vulnerable to his power to shape them to suit his own ends. In this sense it is no different from the situation of vulnerability and impotence that they experienced during the war, although the results are obviously likely to be less hazardous.
There is also an uncanny sense that they may even suffer at his hands as we see in the scene where there is some doubt as to whether he has overheard the women's conversation.
