What kind of situation is he looking at. X years of Juvy then Y years of prison? I'm not particularly "in touch" with the intricate details of Australia's legal system with regards to children. Anyone know how it works?

Mens rea means he knew what he was doing and did it intentionally.

It doesn't necessarily require that he knew it was considered morally wrong, nor should it.
You didn't say 'morally wrong' before, so don't strawman me. :p In these cases, as is said in the article, it's necessary to show that the child understands what they did was wrong, which was established, so *shrug*

I'm thinking it has something to do with the parents? A child of that age wouldn't even have the vocabulary to know the word 'horny' or what it really meant. Come on, is he an adult in a childs body? Obviously a reeeeally messed up adult if it were true.
Makes me angry that there are such people out there, whatever age.

We don't know who can be reformed and who can't.

We do know that it is very hard to reform sex offenders, especially pedophiles.

The risk that he might destroy other innocent lives ought weighs the possible benefits of being able to make him less of a monster.
Obviously precautions must be taken but you don't just write him off because it would be alot of work to get the balance right.

It's pretty screwed up how a kid can even have the idea of raping another human, let alone a 4 y/o.
From the ABC

"...a psychiatrist described the boy as someone who was 'quite likely to become a very dangerous young man'"

12yo found guilty of raping young boy - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

scary
... now that is wrong. What a negligent fuck, why would you make statements like that in public about a 12 year old client? '

I beleive that with the right treatments this kid could live a relatively normal, crime free life. Way to stab this kid in the face and show you have no hope for his future.... There a reason that psychologists usually refrain from diagnosing the harsh syndromes with children, and thats because theres a good chance that they have been caught early enough and you can cure/manage it. In fact i think its actually illegal to diagnose a 12yr old kid with psychopathy[you have to call it "conduct disorder" instead].

wtf are the parents doing if they raise a kid like that? Wouldn't be surprised if they were caught raping 3 year old kids too...

HE RAPED A FOUR YEAR OLD CHILD.

According to you, what does it take before someone is a write off?
As I said precautions would need to be taken to ensure he's not ever in a position where he could reoffend but that doesn't mean progress can't be made.
