Bleh, study sucks. I am SO not taking the HSC as seriously as I should. It's always like, the top top people do nothing but study, the top-ish people (including some 99ers) sometimes have lives where they go out and stuff. A lot of 90+ people drink/smoke/drugs, more than you'd think but they're really smart. Then a lot of people 80-90 try really really hard but they're just not smart and can't do the HSC.
Then anyone below 80/70 is.. Not too smart/doesn't study much.

I wonder which category I fall into?

Anyone care to categorise me?

the top three students in my grade who each share the top 3 ranks in pretty much every subject have never been to a proper party, never had alcohol, have no friends outside of school, don't socialise out of school and have very very weak social skills.

it's sad, but i would rather be in their shoes than mine any day....!!!

IMO people with a UAI/TAR of 99+ would most likely have absolutely no social skills, which is so essential when you step into the real world after school/uni. I got 81.40 for my UAI which I'm quite happy with, I definitely could've done a lot better if I focussed more on school than socialising at the end of Year 12 but it's set me up a lot better for working full-time this year, and interacting with people on a daily basis both in public and at my job.

That's quite inaccurate. I have a few friends who have already achieved that and a few friends that will be able to achieve it and although they do study/revise a lot (more than I) they have a very good social aspect to their life and enjoy what they have.

Although there may be the odd few people who only study and think that the HSC is that important to them, many people are able to find a balance.

And what do you base that assumption upon?

There are a certain species of "perfect" people out there. They are pretty much at the top for everything they do including academics, sports, socialising and even have good looks....grrr not fair!!!

You just need to know the skills and know what to do then you too can achieve the same.

For all those people that spend majority of their time studying and aim for an ATAR above 99. What do you want to do after school? Do you have any spare time for hobbies, parties etc? I'm not opposing it, im just bored and curios.

I mix up my study with liesure and aiming for 85+ as i believe it will help in the long run of life.
stereotype lol.
at least half of the people that will get over 99 ATAR at my school probably play saturday sport in the winter and summer season, and they do not study everyday for hours anyway.

I dunno if I'm classified as a 'top student', with my results and all, but since I'm aiming for 99+, I'll reply.

I go out, I'm a Prefect, had two gfs, done stuff that I've regret. Hobbies generally include playing volleyball (I used to go to Melbourne for Australian Nationals Volleyball Schools Cup), I'm a State qualified Volleyball referee, having reffed various intra-state games, ie, WA vs QLD just three weeks ago.

Go to parties ish, don't get drunk, though, have had a drink once though.

There you go. Of course, 95% of that is on hold now that it's a few months before HSC.

I have friends who are super smart. The guy studies at CRAZY hours of the day, he has the craziest social schedule ever! He goes to school, goes out after school and comes home to study at 1am... then goes to school the next day like he hasnt been up all night. The girl studies heaps but she has a social life as well. Both these friends have the ability to study at crazy times... its like they have super human powers where there bodies never switch off.
That's like my life. Goes to school and procrastinate at home or outside till 11pm or 12am and start studying from 12am to 2am (depending on workload).

and i agree with thomas. many 99 atarers lead normal lives because first of all, getting 99 atar isn't that difficult. consistently undertaken smart studying (about 1-2 hours a day) can give someone with decent brain 99 atar, oh not to menton little bit of luck.
