You guys! I've got news! The next YAP event is Accidental Death of an Anarchist on Tuesday, 7pm, 29 September (which is the last week of the school term and around the mid-semester break for uni students) - Accidental Death of an Anarchist. We'll have 100 specially priced tickets, which will be released shortly and I'll post it on Facebook soon. And now, for even better news: Cate Blanchett and Andrew Upton will be chatting with all of us before the show to give us a quick preview of the 2010 program launch and also a little a bit about STC's greening efforts. As usual, there'll be free snacks for the show. I'll let you know more as soon as we get closer to the date and organise ourselves.

I AM SO THERE. I'll keep checking this thread/YAP facebook page On the STC site it says tix are limited - is that because there are ones put aside for the event or because they just all sold super fast? Eitherway, I'll be lurking around STC that night haha.

Omiigod I LOVE Adam Hills too! I have all his DVDs and I actually spent last Christmas with my family watching the Charaterful and Joymonger. Youtube simply does not have enough Adam Hills clips. Plus, his version of the national anthem is forever embedded in my head.

When did you see Adam? I was actually going to see him during Easter, but then I wasn't sure if I was going to be overseas. Turns out, I never did leave the country and then it was too late. Hopefully, I can go next year, that is, if he does a show.

Ahh he's wonderful! Around mid-April when we saw him. We lucked into the best tickets - twas fantastic! Here's an extended recount of that fateful night Boring damned people.: i'm smitten! I can't wait until he tours again - definitely the best stand-up show I've seen.

*Subscriptions are a good way to start. Check out season tickets for STC.

*Large Scale Musicals. Easy to watch. Enough to entice a return to the theatre. Avenue Q which I just saw is a really good example of a modern musical which is full of comedy.

*Local theatre. Cannot stress enough just how much is out there. Check out:

For a list of heaps of theatre groups, and the shows they are doing

*Variety. Different companies will put on different things. Check out Griffin Theatre Company, Impro Australia, Comedy Store, IPAC, PACT. They all put on different things. I'm sure you can find something you'll like at one of them.

*Newspapers. Look at the arts guide to see what shows are coming up. The Herald will have a section called Spectrum, which gives a good overview of what is on in the arts.

People who are in to the theatre often forget that most people don't know about the shows that are on, or how to get tickets to them. Once you get involved in seeing them, you'll find that they're pretty easy to find. You'll run out of time to see them all.

Did you get the $20 concession ticket? Usually our tickets are around that price without transaction fees, so I don't think you were paying much more when you bought the ticket just now.

lychnobity, will do! Another thing I do is I go to all the various theatre websites (Sydney Opera House, STC, Opera Australia, etc) and just sign up for their newsletters. They're free and I've gotten some pretty good deals so far.

lychnobity: Yeah, signing up to theatre site newsletters makes life a lot easier. Also, look in Drum Media (free music publication) I've also found some good stuff in there

Pigeon: 1st year performance students - Faculty of Creative Arts @ UOW

FCA Performance presents

Pigeon

Directed by Deborah Pollard

Devised in collaboration with 1st year performance students

Inspired by Patrick Süskind’s novella, The Pigeon, director Deborah Pollard set first year students the task of devising a movement-based performance work. The outcome is Pigeon, a practical exercise in dance-theatre for non-dancers.
Described as tense and disturbing, Patrick Süskind’s novella The Pigeon, tells the story of a day in the meticulously ordered life of bank security guard, Jonathan Noel, who undergoes an existential crisis when a pigeon roosts in front of his one-room apartment's front door.

Pollard says,
Our version of The Pigeon is not so much a retelling of Süskind’s tale but a response to a very human story of fear, obsession and tiny epiphanies. Students draw upon their own experiences to devise and choreograph a portrait of modern day maladies.

As part of the research process students were exposed to notions of task based devising, composition and choreographic strategies and story telling.
Pina Bausch and DV8 physical theatre influence the style of the work. It also draws upon contemporary staging strategies by Belgium companies Ballet C de la B and The Need Company.

Deborah Pollard is a performer, artist and director whose work focuses on collaborations with a variety of arts and non-arts practitioners. Since graduating from the Faculty of Creative Arts where she trained in theatre as a performer and director, Deborah’s practice has shifted over the past fifteen years to a hybrid form between performance and visual arts.

Deborah was the recipient of a Winston Churchill Fellowship in 2000 and awarded the Rex Cramphorn Fellowship in 2001. She was a New Media Arts Board Fellow in 2002/3. As a contemporary performance practitioner, she pursues collaborations that disrupt and challenge her notions of performance, theatre and the artistic process. Deborah also works as a freelance director, dramaturge and performer. She has worked extensively with Urban Theatre Projects, Performance Space and Version 1.0.

The Faculty of Creative Arts is delighted to welcome Deborah back to the Faculty to work with current performance students.

*ACCIDENTAL DEATH OF AN ANARCHIST*
The play is a political satire by Dario Fo that pits a madman against a bunch of policemen. Who will win in this glorious battle with officialdom? The play is based on real events involving Giuseppe Pinelli, who died in a Milan police station in 1969. This side-splitting play is brilliantly executed by STC's permanent acting ensemble, the Residents.

As some of you may have noticed, I actually got the time wrong the first time and put it at 5.30am-9pm TODAY. The length itself would challenge even War of the Roses!

Yeah, I try my best to push for the most convenient times for high school and uni students. In this case, there isn't much we can do, since the theatre season runs on its own time. The upside is...well, isn't it the week before the school holidays?

Think of it like this. Sure, those few hours of studying at this point are quite precious, but would 4 hours of cultural enrichment really set you back in the HSC? To be honest, not really. Would you regret not going in order to squeeze in a few hours of study? In my experience, most likely. I missed out on seeing some plays, including Ralph Fiennes' First Love (by Beckett) in 2007, and I still regret it deeply.

Very accurate. Especially if you want to continue with Creative Arts after high school. It's really beneficial if you know what is going on in the theatre world. Post-Dramatic theatre is incredibly different to what most of you have probably encountered. I know I hardly knew any of it before Uni.

It's a good plan! But I think maybe the best approach is to take the 4 hours and divide it over a couple of days prior to the event. So maybe do an extra 30 mins each day during the 8 days leading up to it?
