HSC
N/A
2001: 94/120

DISCLAIMER: I'm not actually disappointed.

2005: 91/120 --> 76%

Q1-5 I killed, full marks. But dropped 14 marks on questions I couldn't attempt, and the rest was part marks lost. Only one 'silly' mistake!

If I can't answer a question within 1-2 minutes of first reading it, then I'll move on and answer the rest of the question. I take down the time I spent on that question and see how much time I should budget on trying to figure it out.

Say I started answering q4. I get stuck on a 4 marker. I'd move on and answer the rest of the question as quickly and accurately as I can. If I have completed the question in 17 mins, I'd leave 3-5 mins to figure it out at the end.

However, if I've exceeded the ~20 mins, I leave the question out. And any time I get left to try it is a bonus. Also, if it's a very hard paper, I'll do everything slowly, and give myself an extra 3 mins for q4-8, and don't bother checking.

PS I'm constantly checking the clock in my exam, literally

EDIT:

If it's partial fractions, there is a quick of getting a,b,c without using simultaneous eqns
Cheers for the insight.

The quicker method, surely you're referring to the substitution method?

2008 - 119/120

Disclaimer: Posted mark may be over ten marks away from the true mark.
Buts that still a pretty good mark if you got 105+ which would have aligned to 96.
Still only manage to get 80-100/120. Do you guys just do HSC or do you do other trial papers?

Hmmm, 105 only aligned to 96? =\
Pretty much. Raw marks are aligned linearly between band cutoffs. Band 6 cutoff (90 HSC) is 75~/120 raw and 100 (HSC) is exactly 120/120.
Then 105/120 would align to 97-98.

I'm certain it isn't linear between bandcutoffs. e.g. Going from 90 to 95 takes much lower raw exam marks than going from 95-100.

Linear as in.. Example:
Say 71 was band 6 cutoff and 120 raw was 100 HSC mark
Then there's a 50 raw mark range for everything between 90-100 HSC mark
All the marks are then distributed linearly as in anyone with 71-75 gets 90, 76-80 gets 91, 81-85 gets 92.. so on until 116-120 gets 100.
(The numbers aren't actually rounded until they're averaged with your moderated internal marks first, which are also not rounded. The final average is then rounded to give your final HSC mark)

That's really good. You might get a state ranking this year. btw, where can you get pre-1995 papers on the internet?
Looking at your subject marks, I reckon that as long as your English is up there, you may actually get 99.95. Infact, you remind me of Laurie Fields. :p).
Yeah, he might get an ATAR of 99.95 but i don't think he's as good as Laurie Fields because Laurie Fields did top the state in 3 extension+continuer languages and state ranked in most of his other subjects. But those marks are still prtty awesome.

i think he is reffering to the "supa cool method"

suppose:

5x = a(x-2) + b(x)
what you can do is,
let x = 0
thus you can solve for a straightaway
then for b
you let x = 2
which will make a = 0 and you can get b straightaway again.

if you call this substitution method, then you are not doing this method justice.
get it right and call it "supa cool method".

Haha, while that is true, all I said was that redfield reminded me of him.
