the ad is on the link :). it's not upsetting or anything, i just find it really odd, and commercialised. it's actually a cute ad, and if it wasn't for jesus i would probably like it. and that's not saying that i'm trying to take a negative view on the church, i just find it unsettling, the amount of effort put into advertising when i've been led to believe that the church stands for other ideals?

and, basically what mazarati was saying, surely they could spend their money on better things? the evangelists are choosing to do with their time what they wish, and said time wouldn't cost thousands/millions of dollars as i'm assuming an ad campaign on prime time tv would be.
heya, im a christian and my church has been involved in the Jesus all about life campaign (but then so has every church in sydney :p) so maybs i can clarify some stuff.

I think i get what you mean about the churches ideals, ie the church shouldnt stand for materialism and thus should avoid media. but its our point of view that utilizing the resources we have and conforming in some way to our society in order to relate and reach people on their own terms rather than on our terms is a good thing and is justified by Pauls writings in the bible that "you must become like those around you to reach those around you, within Godly parameters." We do not seek to gain our value from material success or to become a corporation, we only wish to relate to people in the modern age and be flexible (though we wont compromise on issues of beliefs and morals)

as for how we are using our money in mazaratis comment, well their is debate about that amongst even fellow Christians so i cant speak for all of us on how best to use our funds, but it is the consensus of the Church that our primary objective to bring people into relationship with Jesus. Yes we must stand up for the rights of the oppressed, we must feed the hungry, clothe the poor and fight for the oppressed but none of this has any value if we forget the purpose of all these things, to show people the love of Christ and bring them to know him. This is enforced by allot of scripture but i feel summarized in "what good is it to gain the world but forfeit your soul."

The Jesus all about life campaign is all about telling people about Jesus, reaching back out into our own community, because all people need Jesus, the rich and the poor, the hungry and the gourmand. And yes this is expensive but what good is our money if not used for eternal purpose? (and for the record we haven't neglected our overseas commitments in the midst of this either, just shifted a portion of our resources.) :) hope that cleared up some of the issue, any further questions id be happy to answer

haha @ all these ads.
In the media, Christianity is either shat on, or used to profit in some way or another, because salvation sells. They've been selling salvation for centuries. The catholic church was selling both holy water and salvation at one stage.
This also ties in with churches out there that are so big and cashed up, they could compete with companies listed on the stock exchange (think Hillsong).

its looked like a business for the past 2000years you deadshits
What? What a stupid and offensive thing to say. Christ violently drives out the charlatans from His temple, as we do too. You can point to a few various Christian sects (heretics), but not the Universal Church.

+1
This is the biblical P.O.V. for using the Church for commercial profit, and Protestants, of all Christians, should know this as the Bible is the main source of authority for Protestantism.

Who cares? Advertising religion would seem to fall under freedom of speech (communication - implicit).

I think of these TVCs no differently to ones for Bunnings. They're marketing a product, just because I don't want to buy it does not mean it shouldn't be advertised.

Is it a good use of their funds? Well that depends entirely on their balance sheet - however by way of speculation:

The church derives revenue from parishioners and investments. Attendance continues to trend down and they took a battering in the GFC. This gives them financial cause to reverse declining attendance, they also need to reverse it to maintain relevance in society and because a certain degree of evangelism is explicit in their doctrine.

To be honest I am surprised that they didn't advertise sooner - especially given churches like Hillsong...

O thats just ludicrous. Lets think about this, who actually makes money in a church system? The ministers get paid in staggeringly low amounts. The patrons are willingly donating. The people who acts as its board members are usually volunteers. There are no shareholders in a church.

So whats your theory? That poor and starving kids from undeveloped nations are running this "christianity money-making" scheme that allows the upbringing of living standards in their home country? The money acquired from the donations of the patrons in a church, are utilised to advance society, to help and benefit the weak and impoverished. To save those that we believe need saving.

Also, this series of advertisements are ran by a seperate society, if i remember correctly the bible-society, which branches from the main church. They take NO BENEFIT whatsoever from these series of advertisements, except knowing that they are fufilling God's will.

Maybe if they stopped spending money on funky light shows and state-of-the-art sound equipment, those ministers would get paid more. BTW DID I SAY HILLSONG IS A COMPANY THAT PAYS ITS SHAREHOLDERS/BOARD MEMBERS LOTS AND LOTS OF MONEY?? NO. It's a comparison in regards to the amount of money that church actually makes in one week, and how they spend some of it. Fuck. I can't handle some people today.

Anyone who uses Jesus or God for advertising should be shot. However, Koorong, I believe, is not in the wrong. They are moving society forward by donating money, and helping people be saved. But I am pretty sure that Jesus won't have the solution to sunburn. That is fucking retarded. Idk why people are even debating this.

i find it unsettling, it seems to insinuate that the church these days is just a corporation, and i don't understand what's with the ads?

corporation? utter nonsense! its not like the vatican is the richest institution in the world....oh wait

and i think the churches have finally realised that they need more that the threat of hell to coax more people in to christianity...the new generation are much more in tune with the ways of the modern world i.e. they need pretty colours and big writing too

you make it sound as though they're advertising a bigmac =.=

they're not trying to sell anyone anything, they're just trying to remind everyone that Jesus is here, and we can turn to him when things go wrong.

and since Jesus is God and God created the universe, with all it's little intricacies, i'm pretty sure He would have the solution to sunburn.

Christianity is starting to sound like one big company.
Whenever I go to church these days, we must sign non-disclosure and non-compete agreements, are briefed on our obligations and limitations as end-users, and are informed that the church is not legally responsible for any miracles occuring whilst on property.
