A question for you all:

What do you think is the average number of hours a casual employee gets per week at, say, a large retail store?

And to make it a bit more personal, how many do you get a week?

it's casual, so it would vary from week to week.

im an xmas casual at DJ's, 3 weeks ago i worked 5 days that week, for 5hrs each day, 2 weeks ago i worked 4hrs a day for 5 days, last week was mon/wed/fri, 4hrs on mon/fri and 9hrs on wed, this week i have mon/tues/wed, 4hrs each day.

It depends on the staff demand at the store. The whole point of casual is being able to be flexible about your hours/availability.

You may be in for one shift one week, and 6 shifts the next, it depends on staffing numbers as I said.
I get between 3 shifts (15 hours) to 6 shifts (20-38 hours). One week I was called in for almost all days, worked 38 hours (double shift on one of those days).

at the moment, only 1 or 2. although last week i worked five shifts. my store doesn't begin to get busy until just after christmas, when all the tourists arrive. i was told yesterday that i would be getting a lot more shifts then. like everyone else has said, it varies.

as a supervisor, i'm more likely to call a mobile than a home number. its just that we are more likely to get said person than a parent/sibling etc.

but you don't NEED a mobile phone. most of us have given rosters anyway, though you do often get called in randomly.

I work at maccas just casual but I get between 28 and 34 hours a week nowadays, it really depends on how many people they need to work and whether or not you're a good worker. They're more likely to give you more work if you work hard every shift and are super reliable etc... It's exhausting never being able to slack off on shift but it certainly pays off, no pun intended

haha really why?
the store he was at was pretty crap. they never did any proper training with him like you said, just put him in front of a burger station for two shifts and away he went. it was just a really shit store, and i'm sure not all kfc stores are like that.

he didnt think twice about quitting, haha. though he's not exactly in a position where he NEEDS to be working, otherwise i reckon he would have sucked it up.

Yeah fair enough a lot of stores aren't that great, really depends on the managers and other team members.

haha really why?

KFC is the bombbbbbb
Maccas has really good training though (apparently) but they have wayy to many menu items
My training wasn't good but the store had only been open for 6 months so hardly anyone knew what they were doing... these days its fairly good...
as far as the menu items go, you just learn to deal with it, if you're a reasonably logical person it's reasonably easyish...

At my BigW store, no casuals rarely get above 12hrs per week, most just get around 8hrs. Only Nightfill are usually casual and if your good you will be given a part-time contract (which is usually permanant until you eventually crack it).
