To become first in a course do you just have to get the best mark in the exam or is your internal assesment rank/marks applied aswell...?

You'd have to be ranked first internally and beat the rest of the state in the external exam, therefore giving you the highest HSC mark.

No, you just have to come first in the exam. If there is more than one person first, then they include internal marks

nah if you're ranked 50th internally and get 100% raw in external then you probably won't come first in state.

Chances are that wouldn't happen though, I don't think.

If you're ranked 50th in the school, you'll get the 50th highest exam mark - or thereabouts, and the person who gets 1st in the school will get your hard-earned 100% exam mark. I think.

Nah. There are a few threads in the guidance and counsel forums. Cbb explaining here.

Here's my explanation:

I knew I already knew most of it... it's just that regurgitating them at 11pm is not exactly the best time to do it =P

Don't get your hopes up too much though, a girl at my school (who was accelerated) was first internally, only lost 1 mark all year (in the trials) and even had full marks in prelim ext 1, but she only ended up with 96 for her HSC mark. I mean that's an awesome mark, but it still isn't a first in course.

Good luck though, I hope you get it. It's always good to have a goal.

=)

What I don't understand is how kids he aren't ranked first internally end up first in a course. A couple of years ago 2 kids in James Ruse topped the state in Physics and neither were ranked first internally.

Yeah, how can she get only 96 if she only lost one mark and she was first in the course?

Not true. I was ranked 3rd internally, but got 100 externally. They take the HSC mark, which is an average of the internal+external.

FYI, the scaling process (in relation to the ATAR) takes the RAW marks. My HSC mark scaled up to 100 due to my raw.

My friend was ranked 2nd in physics and topped the state.

Another person was ranked 4th in phyiscs (in other year) and topped the state.

So...yeah...

It's Miss 99.95 ATAR!

Anyway, if you were 3rd and got scaled up to 100 due to the raw mark - shouldn't the 2nd and 1st placed people too get 100 and should therefore top the state?

This system gets more and more confusing.

From what I've heard there are very minor differences (decimal points) which are taken into account but usually thiskind of stuff is complicated and hard to understand.
