If it did become permanent you would get used to that time, infact you would probably grow to LOVE that time...When I first started going in at 5am, I hated it...getting out of bed was the worst part, but now, come 4am I'm out of bed, onto the PC for 10 mins to do some emails/check a few things, have a bit of breakfast, freshen up and out of the door at 10 to 5.

It's brilliant because now I'm back as 2IC, yes I might start at 5 but my day finishes at 11....therefore I have the rest of the day to do.....well nothing :)
You know what, it wasn't too bad. I did 6-3, 6-10.30 as SSA putting tickets up and 11.30-3 operator, and once I was on F/E, it was pretty good.
The only thing was when I went to go to tea at around 9oclock, I pretty much got told by the boss lady person that they didn't take tea breaks until everything was done...well I saw her still working on them at about 2pm! So I was like, uh, okay, but then the STM heard us and told me to go to tea. As I walked away, I heard him mutter to her "don't piss her off. she's good at this, and you know noone wants to do this shift." HA!

It's so weird thinking you're just getting out of bed at 5AM when it's been daylight for like four hours here.

Yes...

That means that our store which is open for like 15hrs can not refill once. That means that after 9:00, 2 hrs after open all the populars are gone, and 5hrs, all the rarer ones are gone. Also, we cant fill the smoke load till after the store has closed, which means that all the popular ones are empty (with none left) for most of the day. VERY annoying.
so, when you run out on the shelf, do you have to keep running back to the cupboard and use like a half empty carton. that seems utterly ridiculous.

I'm pretty sure grade 3 and up don't have junior rates since they are considered senior (responsibility and all).
Sweeeeeeeeeeet, I'm gonna be on grade 5 for 4 weeks in a little while, manager relief!

So where was this no filling policy announced? Does anybody know who the Region 8 Compliance Specialist is? Because we also re-pack our cigarettes to go back to the security room like half an hour before close.

Oh my sweet Lord.

We close at 9, i got home at 10! Deli cabinet, Coolroom, part of the freezer chests and possibly the meat cool room all failed due to heat (this seems to be a v common theme amongst Tas stores, does it happen elsewhere or just due to our build? Like at my old store it happened EVERY NIGHT when it was hot). The fixers had to come all the way from DEVONPORT (two and half hours or so away), so Duty Mgr will be there til midnightish. Anyway she asked me to stay til 9.30 to help Deli...OK..but then she helps me count the last register ... and i accidentally reject the count GRGGRGRGR.
Then we count it again, $140something UP.
Count again: $1664 up (WTF!?!?!)
Count again: - $21.05
By now its 9.25 so we accept the last one.
But then my sister gave me leftover polenta with bolognese sauce when i dropped round which cheered me up.
Oh and we also couldn't find the safe keys for about an hour until we discovered someone left them in an unlocked drawer in the services office ... tusk tusk.

My store is starting Homeshop next month. We were supposed to be starting before christmas but it got delayed.

Its a whole seperate dept, with its own managers and staff. We have 40 Homeshop staff, though some do checkouts shifts as well. They are all casual because we don't know how its going to go.

Basically, the idea is that they are in 5-8am, and go through and get the shopping that customers order online. Then once its all packed, delivery drivers deliver it out to the customer.

(I just reread that and it sounds completely obvious, so yeh :()

We haven't started yet, but I think its something like the biggest stores in each area/region (ie we are the biggest store in 1.5, so we're the pilot) that are chosen. The biggest problem we've had so far is that there is 40 new casuals with no hours, because it got delayed so far.

ETA: I know that probably didn't help. BUt thats all I know.

Ok so I am 17 and have been a supervisor for about 6 months and have never had to run the F/E as SUPER-IC but now i have suddenly found out that I have to run an entire saturday 7-6 by myself with no other supervisors... usually on a saturday there is a super-ic and me, but the other supervisor is on leave... *GULP* I have no idea what to do! can someone please give me some tips on running the F/E smoothly

im not the expert on this so wait for a second opinion :)
1) yes the intermediate pay rise will go through this week, but the backpay will not be paid until the new agreement is signed.
2) as babikakez said it is mostly the major stores in each regions are'a, again this is new to me, i didnt even know Homeshop was in WA?!?

I threw out my info on the pay rise last week :( But I think ekul444 is correct.

There would have to be more stores in WA doing homeshop, someone said Joondalup was going to serve the northern metro area, just as we were doing the southern area. So then of course you would have the inner city areas (as thats quite a target demographic for homeshop) and at least one eastern suburbs store.

AFAIK its only metro stores at the moment.

I'm guessing you wouldnt have service manager office access?

Just pretty much do what you normally do. Assign people to registers, fill out the express alert sheet. People who are register trained should be high lighted in the fire drill book (at my store anyway) but youd have a pretty good idea who is I'm guessing.

IF you have office access print the POS over/short summery report from the previous day and fill out the overs and short sheet.

Make sure the smoke load was done and put away the night before.

Thats about it I think. Cos your usually only a back up supervisor they wont expect you to do everything, just do what you can.

Keep on top of breaks... you don't want to be caught out in a really busy period and 3 people need their breaks. (who is doing your break?) I usually send a person from mains and a person from express at the same time... and if there's a lull I try and get 2 people to go at once, but make sure you're not sending people too early.

If you get people lined up (i.e. one person waiting behind a practically full trolley that's being unloaded) call express alerts. Don't wait until there are more people lined up to call them... call them early and get people from other departments down there (even if 1 person at a time). It will show your duty manager that you can handle the job (don't let your duty manager turn up and wonder why you haven't called express alerts - I know they hate you stealing other staff but they hate cranky customers more!)

Also, make sure you complete the Food Safety book (scale & EAS/deactivator checks).

Re breaks: I put my tea breaks on the grid as though they are meal breaks. That helps to remember them. No more than one tea break at a time (if possible) and I try not to have two on lunch at the same time (though this can be hard). Also you need the duty manager to cover your break make sure they are aware EARLY that they have to cover it.

Get on top of spot checks when its quiet. I don't know if all stores have the 50% rule, but if possible I snap a till as soon as someone has come off it (ie express after express alerts, smokeshop after the smokeshop operator has come back from lunch). Most people in my store do 3-5 hour shifts on Saturdays, so register turnover is high.

So there is seriously only two supervisors in your store on a Saturday? Thats such a foreign concept to me, haha.

we had three of our front enders spend the past two days just scanning everything with rf guns.

not exactly sure why, something to so with homeshop.

Thats to enter the products that are available in your store into the homeshop system, so that customers aren't ordering stock that you don't sell.

Its not uncommon though;

On saturdays I'm an operator from 7-5 each week, and on off week there is me, the supervisor, and another supervisor (her second in charge) who is a junior and is only really there for numbers (yes, harsh, but I seriously know more of whats going on then she does). Because I'm a senior, I get to help the 1st supervisor in express (smokeshop) all day helping other staff, and doing the other simple supervising duties until 1:30 when her replacement arrives. It is the biggest turnover in our store on saturdays, and for most of the day there is only 1 trained supervisor there.
See in my store on a Saturday there is CSM/2IC and another supervisor - so thats two rostered specifically for supervision. Then there will be myself and one or two other supervisors on as operators, plus the three that are training. So thats up to eight supervisors, plus smokeshop operator who is also supervisor trained.

Even if you take out the three that are training, thats still 4-5 supervisors on for most of the day.
