]I'm in year 12 and I'm just wondering how many hours of study you would recommend, especially those of you who got 85+ ATAR. I need at least 80 to get into my course. This time doesn't include homework time or assignments, just study in preparation for the HSC. My subjects are Maths, Adv English, Biology, Legal, Modern Hist and Ext History.

This is the timetable I was thinking of following. Obviously I would study more before exams lol. View attachment 20233
Thanks for any advice!:sun:

hey chill with the time table!

I personally would not stress myself by dividing my day so strictly...

I bludged so much during year 12 that i seriously doubt it is necessary to have a full study plan unless you are gunning for like 99.95.

just remember a few simple rules:

1. Maths should be done as regularly as possible (aim to do maths basically every day - hw should take at least an hour every night and this should be sufficient for 2 unit maths) as it requires constant repetition.

2. English, the best thing to do is simply start very early with your practise essays so you can get it fixed by your teacher many times. Also, simply consider about what you want to write about throughout the day (on the bus, walking home, eating dinner) that way you don't waste time just sitting there at your computer blanking out. it works wonders trust me :)

3. modern history just write your notes for syllabus as your teacher goes through it at school... be on top of this as it can get overwhelming during hsc time if you don't write your own notes at the start of the year. (because alot of content). it doesn't take long to write notes so 3 hours a week on writing notes for modern history would be the maximum amount of time you would ever ever ever need to do. (i personally didn't write notes for mod history and hated myself come hsc time bcuz i just had 2 boxes of textbooks and printed texts from teacher).

4. biology - like all sciences, you should write your notes for it as soon as possible (even ahead of your teacher) then simply revise it as your teacher covers it in class. by test time you will know everything back to front. (Just spend 2 hours writing notes every now and then to keep ahead of the class).

5. try to do maximum 2 subjects in one night... better to go in depth in two subjects than shallow in 3.

iuno about ext history or legal tho...

Anyways, I assure you 2-3 hours every night is MORE than enough to secure you a pleasing result. You could skip many nights of work totally and still make up for it in a few days, so don't stress!

gl hf with the hsc :)

LOL I love how you timetabled in the Simpsons xDD
That being said, in my opinion timetables are quite hard to stick to - a teacher might set a piece of hard urgent homework that's due tomorrow(!!!) and your whole timetable will get screwed up trying to complete it.
The way my teachers at school put it is - do what you have to do when you have to do it, but at the end of the week look back and make sure that you've spent 3-4hrs on each subject (of course, it would probably be longer for subjects like maths, etc).

I aim for 90 minutes every day of the week - including study, homework and the like.

It's not specific, it's just 90 minutes and on the spur I pick what subject I'll devote the 45 minute session to, then either continue with the same subject after a 15 minute break for the next 45.

Trick is don't make it specific, leave flexibility.

I did everything randomly. Whatever I felt needed to be done, I did it. :)

1 hour a week is fine darling

Rofl

Totally... an hour a week- 99.95 for sure!

Depends on what you want (only read your question, not the whole thing :hat:)
99.95--> go nuts and revise, revise, revise.

below 80--> don't do anything

In between --> revise a bit each day, like two hours.

Studying as in reading notes/books or everything to do with revision?

If just study - 0 hrs a week is fine, but do a bit before exams.

For everything else, just do what needs to be done :)

An hour of study per day and listening / doing my work in class got me an ATAR of 89.35. I also had 3 study periods per week (50 minutes each) which I used to do homework and assignments.

I did really easy subjects (general maths, standard english, etc) so my workload was pretty small. With subjects like yours you may require a bit more study than I did.

I found that focusing on one subject each day was more beneficial than doing 12 minutes per subject per day.

This is the way to go! Everyone's smart, its just the people who are smarter identify their limits much quicker. :spin:

You can't relay place a time on it. Everyone has differing focus and concentration abilities. What I do suggest as advice (which I was told for the HSC) is to know your syllabus. It is your study guide and all questions I do believe must be directed from the syllabus.

Really pay attention and focus in class. Ask your teacher questions if you don't understand something. I know you probably get told this a lot but it will help when you study. You don't want to use your study time to try and understand something.. (unless you plan on working ahead)

Try to study everyday. It doesn't have to be intense, but something light. It's better than cramming in the week before an exam block.. right?

Just study as much as you think is right. Only you can now how much you have should study and how much you know, just study until you are comfortable with all of the courses.

I advise that you study whenever you have any kind of inspiration to, as there will (likely) be times you really wont want to.

Although I said you should judge for yourself and such, year 12 are 'supposed' to be doing 3.5 hours study a day (starting from 1 hour a day in year 7 and increasing 30 minutes per year).
I don't necessarily agree with this btw.

Few people do that much, and provided you use your time effectively I would recommend about 2 hours a day (including weekends) to achieve 80+.

I did ~17.5 hours a week in '09 and only got 70.55 atar (lololol) but it wasn't intensive study and my maths really dragged me down, and tbh I wasn't aiming any higher. I know you wanted people who got over 85 but yeh.

School: Be best buddies with your teachers, unless theyre fuckheads.

Afterschool: Do all the social stuff you need to do quick. Eat by 5 or so, and start studying. After you finish (8, 9, 10 w/e), its chilling times? :D Maybe you can squeeze simpsons into it as well, but yeah. Sometimes its also better to wake up much earlier, sleep earlier, and study like, 5 am - 7 or something.
