Was it directed at me? Trolling a little? You can't actually believe the stuff that's coming out of your mouth? Surely you are a little smarter than that? Why don't you tell us your whole story in detail. What do you do, where do you work, what school did you go to and how you went in the HSC. What are your career goals? Maybe we were too quick to judge and we should get the full story...

Ok back. anyways
I got into uws for media/comm but my i had a realisation/epiphany/whatever that it wasn't what i wanted to do anymore. so i got this job as a gap year thing, but now i am keeping it for <3 years to gain experience in the workforce (might even make my way up into head of admin lol) but i think ITT i got confused between admin and businesspeople so shh lol.

i want to become a parliamentary staffer for (preferably) a liberal minister as i did work exp as one when i finished hsc (the awesome thing on my resume + awesome reference they gave me) so if i can get that in 3-4 years i'll be in my dream job while all my friend are still at uni?

idk, works for me

Well that's all very lovely, but just because it works for you, it does not mean it will work for everyone. I'd hardly call your job a business job, more so in the public servant sector. And admin is not business job either

But, if you do get into business admin, it is some experience that can lead you to the places that you want to go into in the business industry. Some office experience is better than none at all.

Christina, you do realise that you're never really going to be anything more than a glorified receptionist in this career path you've chosen?

Regardless of whether you're a lowly gofer or POTUS' personal secretary, you're still nothing more than a glorified receptionist or assistant. You don't actually make any business decisions.

Either do a degree in Commerce, slot yourself into middle management and work your way up. Chances are low you'll become CEO though, and will take a long time.

OR

Have an idea. Turn it into a business. Make the business successful. Expand and continue. Hard work is necessary, as are a lot of other entrepreneurial skills, though you can definitely be in charge if successful.

Competition is high, there are thousands of Commerce graduates every year. If you don't want to start a business, then increase your skills, and make contacts.

God you're naive.
You can't just randomly start a new business anymore. It's not like good old days of yon when economies of scale were much lower and even the largest business were smaller. Virtually every industry is now made up of a select few multi-billion dollar players which you can never hope compete against.
The only possible way to start a business these days is in a new or emerging industry or with a niche market idea to fundementally change the way a current industry is run. Now, the former is incredibly difficult for anyone outside of the sciences to do, as by the time one hears of these new industries, they are already exploited. The latter is also painstakingly difficult to do, especially if ones lacks creativity (which you obviosuly do in having even made this thread), and most of the ideas involved are stumbled upon by accident.
In short: You are not going to become a multi-billionaire from starting up a new company. You will probably end up making around $50k a year for the remaining years of the business after many years of constant debt and red ink. Good luck with that.

One thing that people should also know, is that networking is invaluable in finding you a job. A majority of individuals get their jobs from networking - knowing the right people.

I think your confusing the business industry with administration. There is administration work in all industries. Business men and women make decisions regarding the direction, marketing, finances, HR etc etc etc of a company. Administration people make decisions too, like what brand of milk to use when making their boss a coffee lol.

You are not going to get to a CEO position straight off. You have to work your way from the bottom to the top. Not even a uni graduate will get a management position after uni. The only way you will become the top boss of a company is to start your own.
