As far as I know Monash is the only uni offering a combined MBBS/LLB degree. It's a curious idea - I geuss it makes sense if you have strong interests in both areas. Alternatively it'd be useful if you wanted to go into something like an area of medical law or perhaps even health policy. It could also be handy if you wanted to be able to cover your ass as an obstetrician.
Some of the good reasons I am attracted to the course! Monash being in Victoria is a setback, albeit a minor one given I can 'find' some of this crap they call 'money' if I work hard. The move could be hard... anyway, a very attractive course name and description! I want to specialise in paediatric surgery, if it is possible to do so and avoid performing or assisting a circumcision. Is this possible?
If not, Paediatrics and Child Health ftw. I may change my mind, but helping kids avoid what I have endured would make me smile every morning I got out of bed. I like the holistic approach too.
If I don't get into Monash (UMAT might not favour liberal, caring people like me who are against routine circumcision at all costs, except for when there is gangrene or a threatened life)...I'm hoping to do an MBBS at UWS then a JD at ANU (Juris Doctor, a law degree that equips professionals with all the skills required for admission to the bar, with optional PLT).
I love the idea of lawyers taking a holistic approach to their work and actually helping their clients rather than...um...being scum of the earth and ripping off their clients, avoiding pro-bono work at all costs! The dual qualification would give me, and people like me (if there is such a thing! Haha) opportunities to work across complex fields, dealing with logic puzzles, word puzzles, medicine/surgery.
