ethnics?? shit we should just secede from you eastern-state basket cases then when your economies implode we will have no problem finding nice white workers to dig up the rocks in our backyards.Both.

You are living in denial. I know a large number of young people who are quite happy to stay on the dole. They pretend to give out resumes and look like they are seeking work, but they aren't really. You'd be amazed how many young people used to come into my work and ask the manager to sign his dole sheet even though they hadn't put in a resume or actually inquired about jobs.Abbott is truly out of touch.
First of all most young people always seek work.
I have never heard of a case where the youth are just "sitting there".
Second of all even if he did stop welfare payments it would hardly make me go all the way to WA and get a mining job.
I think he has totally lost his mind.
You have not met my friend Russel. He is 24 this year and spends his days giving a blow by blow account of his bong-punching, fishing escapades and tinkering with his ford escort panel van on facebook.I have never heard of a case where the youth are just "sitting there".

Agreed with the above. Furthermore, those who have never paid income tax (rather than consumption taxes) in their life think they know all and live in an idealistic world- welfare payments (aka transfer payments) make up the bulk of tax expenditure and as a taxpayer it sucks hearing about people abusing the system and just not trying. I agree we need some form of safety net but if you're under 30 and not disabled, I see absolutely no reason why you can't work. There are so many jobs out there- heck even data entry & imaging (scanning stuff) pays pretty well above minimum Maccas wage.If you've never paid a day of tax in your life, why should those that have be supporting you, If you never pay tax in Australia during your working life and move here after retiring, should you be eligable for an Australian pension? It's a very similar situation, I think uni-student support should remain however, most of those people are going to become skilled workers and eventually add to the economy (or so you'd hope). Supporting disabled people that cannot find jobs as a direct result of their disability also makes sense, its not their fault that they can't work. Removing welfare for those that deliberatly sit on there arses, pretend to look for jobs and deliberatly botch interviews is another story entirely. If you are a healthy individual, you should either be gaining skills to work or actually working, if not, no money. Seems fair and reasonable to me.
That would help business competitiveness and encourage more hiring but I don't think it's the way to go. Probably better off reducing the penalties for dismissing employees (Work Choices much?). Last thing you'd want in an economy is to go backwards and encourage substitution of advanced capital/technologies with low skilled human capital.abolish minimum wage
Well what we need to do is abolish payments or restrict payments to people are not in work, education or training. You have not met my friend Russel. He is 24 this year and spends his days giving a blow by blow account of his bong-punching, fishing escapades and tinkering with his ford escort panel van on facebook.
Thursdays usually read something like "woooo pay day today thanks all you guys! wooo bong on!!"
he went over 12 months without venturing outside of his own suburb for fucks sake...

Ah yeah that's exactly what Tony Abbott is talking about. He's not talking about students at all he's talking about unemployed bums who sit on the dole and don't actually attempt to get off it.Well what we need to do is abolish payments or restrict payments to people are not in work, education or training.
What i'm talking about are students who receive payments.
I certainly do not think they should be in the same league as dole bludgers.
I receive these allowances as I am a full time student but I certainly am not sitting around doing nothing.
I'm working all the time.
