I'm quite sure the vast majority of students do 12 units, so I doubt it would be especially hard. Nevertheless, it is Year 12, so you have to be prepared for hard work regardless. But as I said, there is nothing especially difficult about 12 units, as most people take this amount.

Definitely not too difficult at all. Loads of people take 12 units, sometimes more (what with ext English, Maths and History).
I did 12 units for my HSC last year and managed it well. Personally, I actually think I would have been more stressed if I had only done 10 units. I kept General Maths as a "safety-net" sort of subject (I'm glad I didn't drop it because even though I worked my ass off for Music my I-did-nothing-in-this-class-for-two-years Maths mark still counted towards my ATAR... go figure. But those are the sort of things you should consider).

I don't think so. If you sit 2 unit once, the result carries over, meaning he only has to sit 3 unit next year.

Other people don't always know what's best for you xD Like last year, everyone who said they wanted to do 3 sciences for prelim this year received an :O and a "that's suicide!" response. I'm one of those people doing all three and personally it isn't that bad =) Also take into account how you're managing now with 13, and how much effort you think you are going to put in next year. You sound like the type of person who should have no problem with 12 units next year, as long as you work hard =D
