oh free speech? That isn't in the constitution or nething.
Are you kidding me? If he had been gaoled or fined or ordered to do community service because of it then that would be an attack on free speech, when your fighting a war and you have a choice between two generals, one who will say helpful things and one who will not it isn't an attack on liberty to choose the one who will keep his mouth shut.

Universal Declaration of Human Rights Article 19:

Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.

When it says everyone, that includes McChrystal.

Not really.

Uniform Code of Military Justice -
888. ART. 88. CONTEMPT TOWARD OFFICIALS
Any commissioned officer who uses contemptuous words against the President, the Vice President, Congress, the Secretary of Defense, the Secretary of a military department, the Secretary of Transportation, or the Governor or legislature of any State, Territory, Commonwealth, or possession in which he is on duty or present shall be punished as a court-martial may direct.

In McChrystal's case, a court-martial did not direct punishment. Obama did.

Yeah but he wasn't punished under the law like a criminal he was sacked from his job.

I actually think it's not about McChrystal. It's not about shutting him up or punishment for speaking up.

It's about making everybody else scared to speak up.

The General's comments were petulant. Any President would have done the same thing.

This is the military of the United States of America (and ignoring current wars, probably the last hope of the world). As you can imagine, the position entails a certain amount professionalism. The President has also stated correctly, debate is welcome but division is not.

And lol at framing this in terms of free speech

He said what he said because nobody else had the guts to do so.

McChrystal has a right to freedom of speech, and Obama, as his employer, has a right to sack or reprimand him for violating a code of conduct.

It's that simple, so stop trying to make a big deal out of it Buchanan.
