they don't look at the mark. they look at the rank.
so say if 17/20 was the top mark, and you continue to get top mark, then you are first place.

then say you score 100% in 3 unit exam, ranked 1st - scaled mark of 50.0

It would only be impossible to get 100 if your external exam mark is 100- in %

correct me if i'm wrong, but i think certain subjects you can't get 100 as your HSC mark whereas in some others you can

it is stillpossible to get 100 HSC mark if both of the following occur:

1. you get ranked first
2. you obtain a scaled exam mark of 100 in the hsc (hence your assessment mark will become 100 also)

e.g. the max mark in English Std. last year was 97/100.

Depends, 2008 max was 96, 2009 was 94, 2010 was 97. 2011 could be 100/100 but I doubt it, it depends on how hard the exam is.

It is actually possible to get 100 as a HSC mark (though not necessarily a scaled mark) in ANY course. It's just that very few people (or no one) have actually achieved it. It has been done in many courses before such as Mathematics and its extension courses. Note that capping applies to SCALED marks not HSC marks.

Just because the top mark in one year or several years is like 99, doesn't mean that the top ranked person actually got full marks in the exam. For example, in English Standard just because the top mark so far is 97/100 doesn't mean that 100/100 is not possible in future years. It's just that no one has ever done well enough to achieve full marks in reality. I mean, back in my day the highest ever mark for English Standard was only 92/100 at the time, it has since increased a fair bit.

ye its just that you expect 100 for pretty much every course considering there are 8,000 students doing a certain subject
