Serious discussion please. Why is it that the working class as a whole tends to be more socially and fiscally conservative than the others? You'd think that some class consciousness and solidarity would mobilise the working class against privilege, but they instead seem to focus their anger on migrants, homosexuals etc - much like the middle class of the southern United States. I find it very nonsensical that the working class is fairly right-wing and often tend to vote for the Liberals, even though it's against their own interests to do so. You'd think that the working class would be far-left.

Thoughts?
I certainly agree with your point. In a sense they really don't know what's good for them - which could be why they're in their position and will probably never get out of it.

there is no such thing as 'class consciousness'

working class peoples (who have never actually comprised the majority of society tbh) are not capable of 'knowing what's good for them' as a class; the few who purport to know this (unionists) generally form associations which actually operate to the detriment of other members of their class (denouncement of non-unionists as 'scabs', increases in regulation leading to greater unemployment etc)

even the russian revolution demonstrates this fact

almost all ostensibly 'socialist/communist revolutions' have in fact been instigated by middle-class pseudo-intellectuals through the use of force/dissemination of propaganda

also in australia the 'working class' has strong roots in irish catholic convicts who were not radical in any way; in fact most of them were very religious

Middle class and working class are the same thing.

This thread doesn't make a whole lot of sense either.

wtf is a plumber or an electrician who makes like 60k a year

is that middle class or working class
The 'working class' consists of unskilled manual and non-manual workers who gain employment solely by selling their labour power.

The 'middle class' represents a diverse group of people who possess some form of qualification and skill that allows them to attract higher wages and better working conditions than unskilled workers.

The 'upper class' refers to those who own and/or manage economic resources (capital)

/labour theory

The colloquial usage of class incorrectly discusses it as though class is a synonym for wealth and standing. Surgeons aren't upper class, and plumbers aren't working class.

"The behaviours of the lower orders disgust me. They give in to base animalistic sensory pleasures. We need to fix them. Tax and regulate them until they stop being noticeably annoying. We’ll say it’s for their own good, but we’ll really stick to the kinds of things that annoy us. So things like making sure everyone in low decile schools takes a course in basic personal finance so they understand how hire-purchase works and avoid making mistakes with loans, we’ll not worry about that. But we’ll tax fatty foods because obese people are unpleasant to look at and we’ll tax the kinds of booze that the lower orders drink because there’s fewer more unpleasant things than a poor idiot who’s drunk."

graney has it right

the only thing is

in australia at the moment we have a labour shortage which makes labour worth $$$ which means working class is earning as much as middle class (educated people)

teachers earn $60k
labourers earn $60k

$60k is not a lot of money

but their jobs should be far more comprehensive

So since I am managing some capital, I am upper class? :cook:

It's hard to define except through personal perception.

Why don't we just lock up the fat people in a gym? Give them no food till they sweat certain amounts of calories. Put lower-class scum in a confinement where they are neither seen nor heard but produce all the required goods for middle and upper class folks? Then we make Rothbard a dictator who can get rid of all the unpleasant people in society as defined by their socio-economic status.
