So is transporting live animals.
True. But i am sure if there is a much cheaper wway to operate, the industry would have already discovered it. Also, with the live exports of cattle, the main part was because that country wanted live cattle to kill inhumanly because they believe it tastes better.

yeah but not as expensive as onshore processing

or else we would process everything here and wouldnt need their stupid halal market

meat processing workers are on big money, its a costly exercise in australia due to our high standards and costs

yeah but that wont work

the reason it was such a big industry is because we could minimise costs by sending the cattle live to indonesia where processing costs are 1/10th of what they are here, hence cheaper beef (still expensive for them though) for the indonesians
Also this reason

So, pass on some of the cost on to the consumers. Yes the industry will be less lucrative but it would still be viable and as I said, create an explosion of employment in the top end.

It would be more the 600,000kg. Stopping live beef trade was the worse idea, it killed a entire industry.
thousands of people's livelihoods completely destroyed, for nothing, and no one in the cities really realizes/cares how bad it's actually hurting these people

fascist police state stuff

Look on it as a Supply and Demand Graph.

Passing on the costs will see less demand, and a surplus of beef. Because of this less is sold.

also they looked at the cattle tags in the 4corners footage and worked out it was several years' of footage stitched together and selectively edited to make it look as bad as possible

also the ABC waited until the end of the wet season when the cattle were about to start being sent over to release the footage to cause maximum damage

yeah of course but it would be even cheaper still to just upgrade the indonesian facilities, so thats whats going to happen

if the govt were smart they would invest in some processing facilities onshore whilst keeping the trade going in the meantime or something idk

Either way the industry isn't in any danger because of it, just put on hold.

of course not, there is just going to be a lot of produce that is wasted and money lost

suspending the trade totally was a poor decision i think, no one wants to see thousands of head of cattle shot and wasted

From a purely economic point of view it was not a good decision but I think there was sufficient popular support from those most directly involved though to trade off a bit of economic fruition for an improvement in standards.

It was one of the worse decisions they could impose.

Piss off, when the decision was announced there was uniform support for it. Andrew Bolt of all people called it a strong stance against a disgusting practice. A few weeks pass and the coalition realise they can make some hay from it by talking about a tiny little dint it will make in the economy and a few party diehards echo the sentiment. It was a perfectly appropriate decision, the hoo-ha that currently exists is just a demonstration of how pathetic and opportunistic this current opposition lot is and the reason that poll after poll shows Turnbull and Hockey to be preferred leaders.

i wasn't trolling, it's actually what they did

you can't just put agriculture on hold, maybe if you're a basket weaver you can stop weaving baskets for a while

cattle and land have massive ongoing costs, these people are fucked

What you seriously think the evil abc was trying to destroy an industry?

You say this but I was in Rockhampton visiting my sister about a week after the shows broadcast and the farmers there were nauseated by what they saw on 4 corners and absolutely adamant that they didn't want their produce being treated in that way. I asked about what it would do to the industry and they said it might push down profits a little bit but that there was no shortage in demand for Australian beef and that, as I said, an Australian processing industry is something they've wanted for years and have been making submissions to companies and governments to kick start it for years.
